The toy train is a must when travelling to Shimla but most people only take it 1 way. It's not a very comfortable 5 hour journey. Very disappointed by the litter along the railway track - lots of people on the train could be seen throwing food and food packaging from the train window, with no regard at all. It... More

I recommend you taking a look at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalka%E2%80%93Shimla_Railway to get an idea about it. It takes about 5.5 hours to complete the entire journey. Train starts from Shimla @ 10:30 AM and reaches Kalka @ 04:10 PM. I'd recommend it if you've got time and your back and knees on your side. Since seats are preety basic, kindly avoid if... More

Many a Bollywood films have filmed songs using this train journey to uplift the minds and spirits of the cine goers romantically into these picturesque landscapes for a dream journey into paradise and justifiably so...... The immaculately maintained stations, some of which are so tiny and adorable where one could simply sit and pass a lifetime, giving a feeling of... More

One of those marvelous engineering feats of the British and now a UNESCO heritage, this train chugs the 97 km distance from Kalka to Shimla in some 5 hours. The nice part is the 900+ curves and some 107 tunnels along the route, the longest of which, the Barog tunnel, is over 1.1 km long! The stations en route also... More

We had tickets for the railway, with reserved seats. Because it takes a long time, our driver said why not join the train at Barog... We drove to Barog (after a very early start!) only to find that the train was at least one-and-a-half hours late! So we carried on (by car) to Taradevi. We visited the nearby Hindu temple... More

It is a 5 hour journey on this smallish train but the time seemed to fly by as we journeyed up and up the mountain. Plenty to see on the way and a few stops to stretch your legs. Take some food and drink with you and enjoy it !!

I have traveled many times from Kalka to Shimla, The station at Kalka and even the weather there tell you nothing about the joy of train ride to Shimla. I would advise anyone who gets sick while travelling in Buses or cars in hilly areas to take the train, it is two hours longer but its scenic comfortable and above... More

It’s a five-hour journey from Kalka up to Shimla, but the ‘toy’ train manages it in style and at an affordable price. Far better than suffering the continuous hair-pin bends if you make the trip thrown-around in a car (as we did on the way down). In fact this is no toy, but one of those marvellous north-Indian hill railways... More

A journey on the Toy train from Kalka to Shimla is like a step down memory lane. The train is tiny and seating can be a little cramped , yet despite it taking about 4 to 5 hours, the views are stunning an we were constantly on the edge of our seats waiting to be surprised round every corner. We... More
