It is a 5 hour journey on this smallish train but the time seemed to fly by as we journeyed up and up the mountain. Plenty to see on the way and a few stops to stretch your legs. Take some food and drink with you and enjoy it !!

I have traveled many times from Kalka to Shimla, The station at Kalka and even the weather there tell you nothing about the joy of train ride to Shimla. I would advise anyone who gets sick while travelling in Buses or cars in hilly areas to take the train, it is two hours longer but its scenic comfortable and above... More

It’s a five-hour journey from Kalka up to Shimla, but the ‘toy’ train manages it in style and at an affordable price. Far better than suffering the continuous hair-pin bends if you make the trip thrown-around in a car (as we did on the way down). In fact this is no toy, but one of those marvellous north-Indian hill railways... More

A journey on the Toy train from Kalka to Shimla is like a step down memory lane. The train is tiny and seating can be a little cramped , yet despite it taking about 4 to 5 hours, the views are stunning an we were constantly on the edge of our seats waiting to be surprised round every corner. We... More

Overall getting the train up to the hill station Shimla was fantastic but a couple of things let it down. Firstly and not the railways fault...it was pouring with rain when we caught the train at 6.30am having just got off an overnight train, we both felt tired and not quite ready to be happy about more train.. We were... More

This trip is one for the train buffs. We took more than 5 hours to climb up to Shimla and the views were stunning and well worth the effort. However, the trains, and toilets are small, basic and uncomfortable. We chose to come back down by 4 wheel drive taxi which took half the time and still saw marvellous views.

The train journey up to Shimla was a lovely experience. We traveled by the Rail Motor....which is something like a bus on tracks. Just 14 passengers and the the driver. One suggestion....convert the roof to a glass one so that the view would be better.

Unforgettable, but an experience not to be missed. Cramped, uncomfortable, tiring, but worth it for the views and the brilliant construction work involved in this amazing railway. (And I don't like trains myself) However you must be prepared to sample the Indian sanitation!! after 5 .5 hours of shaking about that is. Also ensure that you take as little luggage as... More
