Come early to beat the crowds especially if you want to use the amazing bike and walking trail around the lake. It fills up with people as the day progresses making it much harder to ride. You can rent bikes at at probably several dozen bike rental shops all around the lake. Great for families.

The view is really nice even though it was very foggy. We also saw some local residents taking wedding photos there. The local driver told us not to spend money in the shops around sun moon lake as the price of souvenirs would be a bit higher than other places.

The sun moon lake so famous in Taiwan, all tourists may be advised to visit the lake, so I think I should go there, even I only have one day more and even I stayed far away from the Lake, I really liked to take some nice pictures there. Good thing is very convenient take HSR from Taipei to Taichung,... More

Not the prettiest in Taiwan, but worth the trip nonetheless. Beautiful backdrop or hazy mountains, with still water quietly lapping the seaside. Rent a bike and cruise around. Be careful, the gondolas close early in the day even with plenty of sun left. Don't prebook your hotel - they are much cheaper in person.

Sun Moon Lake is one of the highest lake in the mountains of Taiwan. As such the lighthouse and all on its lake is also the highest in Taiwan in term of sea level. There are 3 main stops in the ferry services and that is the recommended choice to explore the locations around the lake. The first stop is... More

Great location, surrounded by mountains. Clouds low and intermittent rain when we were there dampened things. Fairly quiet, off season. Didn't use cablecar as it was too cloudy. Went up pagoda but didn't see anything. Pleasant on the lake, clouds kept lifting and falling, giving typical Chinese mountain mist, which is impressive.

If you want to stay on the lake or at least within walking distance - you've got two options. You can stay in Shuishe or Ita Thao. Both are lakeside tiny towns with restaurants, hotels, street food and souvenir shops. Both are only a couple of criss-crossing streets that can easily be navigated in less than an hour. Both have... The Lake is nice and the view is good but there are other places in Taiwan which are more stunning and interesting. Suitable if you have much time and need to relax.

In reviews of Taiwan it seemed Sun Moon Lake was THE place to go. I took a bus from Taichung and returned latter that day. In my view it seems Taiwanese and Chinese think the place is so wonderful as it is some green space and water and is not covered in smog, unlike rest of Taiwan/China that is cities... More
