It is totally inappropriate to charge money to enter a Buddhist temple. When Sri Lankans see anyone with white skin, they don't see a human being but a Dollar sign so take money where ever possible. I'm a Sri Lankan who's married to an Australian. It was totally embarrassing that I was allowed to enter free of charge where she... More

I would give this a miss unless it's your absolute first time to ever see and witness Buddhist culture and traditions. Perhaps my timing was also a bit wrong as I arrived during the Buddhist new year holiday so A LOT of the locals travelled far and wide to honour the Buddha and perform their own form of worship during... The Temple of the Tooth was one of the must sees for me in Sri Lanka, one of the most revered Buddhist temples in the world. Very thought provoking. A tooth of Buddha is kept in a gold casket inside. Each day the monks check the horoscope and decide when is the most auspicious time that day for people to... More

I have been here many times, as a couple, as a family. The most scared place for Buddhist in all over the world. You are not allowed to wear shorts, short sleeved dresses, see through dresses when entering the temple. Best times of the day to go there is at "Thewawa" time. One starts at early in the morning, around... More

When visiting Sri Lanka it's important to get a feel for the people and the island. Visiting important religious monuments helps with this. I'd recommend a visit here but if you're not a religious person you should have a guide, if not it will be a short visit. Trousers below the knee and shoulders must be covered. Shoes off and... More

Let me first preface my review by saying that I love visiting temples, learning about culture and history, and exploring new sights. However, I must say, that this was the most lackluster experience so far in Sri Lanka (We went to almost every temple in the triangle and enjoyed it) Yes, it is historically important and yes, many people frequent... This place is a must if you are in Kandy. On the shores of the lake it is great to see it in the evening when it lights up. Funniest thing we saw was a monk reading a ben ten manga comic.
