The Dambulla Cave Temples were the last and the best temples which I viewed during my Sri Lanka's "Cultural Triangle" tour. Each of 5 caves was unique and colorful with wall to wall murals and an array of statues. Walking from cave to cave was a study of Buddhist art history through nearly 2,000 years of time.

Outside the season but still with nice weather the caves are much more quiet during this time of year. Beauty is equal to the nicer caves of the valley of the kings in egypt

It is a bit of a climb to the top and worth it. We did get attacked by a monkey that wanted our water bottle - but he let go when we gave him a good shake (he was hanging onto the bottle). The toilets at the bottom are not good at all -beware and have plenty of tissue and... More

Wonderful caves with many Buddha images on the ceiling and statues of Buddhas, very pretty area! Just make sure to wear socks! You have to take your shoes off at the entrance and while the floor is cooler inside the caves, the bits where you have to walk outside are HOT!!

Fantastic paintings and the whole cave system has a great atmosphere. It' a shame there are so many tourists here, but then that's to be expected as it really was worth visiting. We had young kids (ages 2 and 4) and they loved it too, lots of colour and a fascinating place. And a few monkeys help entertain the kids... More

Like most places in Sri Lanka, if you don't have a guide organised by a tour group there are usually people outside who will give you a tour for about 3e. Interesting place. There is a lot of steps up to it though so wear comfortable shoes.

For me this was a far more interesting place to visit than Sigiriya. Peaceful, inspiring, amazing, how these Buddhas were carved out is beyond me, and the paintings are magnificent. A must visit if in this part of the world.

Well worth the climb up to see. Remember you will need to cover up when you get to the top and remove your shoes.

Visited Dambulla caves on 8 March 2014. Really enjoyed it here. Many buddhas to see. Definitely look up at the ceilings when in the caves as the paintings impressed me most. The caves were also a cool refreshing break from the outside heat and you could sense a historic feel of relief and calm from the many visitors both religious... More
