Definitely a worth while day trip from Huaraz. The 3 hour trip has magnificent views of the southern part of the Cordillera, restaurants in Chavin are worth their money and the ruins are quite impressive and different from Incan ones.

Especially since the journey is through such magnificent mountains. The site is just amazing! Many thanks to Stanford for restoring it! A The town is charming, and the museum, built by the Japanese in a safer location about a mile down the road, is fabulous.

I enjoyed it all. Make sure you have an English guide, otherwise its a waste of time. This culture is amazing as well as the preservation of the site. Pablo Tours was great and Gloria is an awesome guide.

The ruins were interesting and nice to see pre-Incan buildings but it was a 10.5hr day from Huaraz for less than 2 hours at the ruins

Make sure you have an English guide, or information downloaded on your phone, or a guidebook! Otherwise you'll be a bit lost....

The trip could have been miserable with a fast driver, there are lots of shoddy travel agencies which hook you up to one of only a few real trip providers and they will tell you anything you want to hear to get you to sign up. Walk to the center for lunch if you don't like the restaurant your guide... More

Despite the 3 hour each way journey from Huaraz, the archaeological site of Chavin was fascinating. I would definiteyl recommend combining a visit to the site with the museum, located nearby. The site is well maintained, and archaeological work is ongoing. The tunnels and stone carvings are in good repair. Worth a visit, especially if you are in Huaraz during... More

The Ruins at Chavin are very well-studied and important to the archaeological development of South America. The site is outside of the city of Huaraz, about 2 hours away by bus. I don't know if there is a regular bus, so you may have to plan the visit in advance. The Site itself is not connected to the museum, so... More

It was our last day in Huaraz, and we were tired of walking, so we took a tour to Chavin... We learned a lot and it was interesting to see how complex these people were! It should be linked to the museum. They complement each other!
