Busy stretch of beach carrying ferry passengers and longtail boats

Very busy stretch of beach. Did not venture too far in as was mostly shops, money exchange, massage centres and bars. Preferred quieter east coast.

We were staying elsewhere on Phi Phi so only visited Ao Ton Sai three times - entering the island, leaving and on a boat trip. Fair to say, it's a happening place. The beach is lovely like most of the island - warm seas, stunning scenery and soft white sand. In between the two beaches is a touristy village full... More

If backpackers really just want to get pissed and act like they're in magaluf why can't they just go there? Tonsai was disgusting it was like a mix between a building site, a swamp and Blackpool. Maybe once this was a beautiful part of the island but it has well and truly been ruined by the so called backpackers.

There wasn't that much going on here, mostly the town and where the ferry pier is. Each visitor has to pay 29 baht as they come off the boat. Lots of places here for diving etc.

Lots of boats and local water taxis etc. The beaches on Phi Phi are not the best, but are sufficient.

There's been A LOT of development of Tonsai in the 10 years we've visited. First time it was a disaster zone of broken concrete and collapsed buildings, and make shift 'restaurants'. (straight after the Tsunami) Fast forward 10 years, and they've built a brand new pier, and a promenade. There is a new raised path to the left as you... More

We found tonsai a backpackers heaven. But we were on our honeymoon and wished for something a little cleaner and relaxed. So like another user once described, if you enjoy loud people and getting shitfaced drunk on dirty streets, by all means spend alot of time in tonsai. Otherwise, it serves the sole purpose of shopping for souvenirs and booking... More
