The detail on this monolithic carving is unbelievable! One could spend quite a long time looking at it, seeing something new with each glance. The rock carvings in Mamallapuram are the best attraction we found near Chennai. In addition to Arjuna's penance itself, there are half-a-dozen other rock carving sites within walking distance, such as the two shore temples and the five rathas (four temples and an elephant carved out of a rock outcrop near the shore). Well worth a day trip! More
