Very interesting bas reliefs. Especially when combined with all the other monuments in the enclosed area around it. The fact that seeing this is "free" whereas it costs 250 rupees to see (up close) the "Five Rathnas" and the Sea Shore Temple......this I find puzzling. My advice (if you're pinching you rupees), look at the Five Rathnas from the road... More

Action speaks louder than Words- Thus uploading pics than writing anything. Please visit this place if you are Mamallapuram I do have to write at least 300 words though. Ideally visit early morning or after 5 PM in the evening to beat the tropical heat. The place would want you to walk a bit, thus please carry enough liquid to... More

Too big for the British to steal, this very cool & little known gem known as the Arjuna’s Penance or Descent of the Ganges is over a thousand years old, a legacy of the Pallava Kings who, fresh from defeating their enemies & plundering their wealth, decided to spend some coin to decorate their kingdom. This story is told in... More

The detail on this monolithic carving is unbelievable! One could spend quite a long time looking at it, seeing something new with each glance. A good tour guide is priceless; ours grew up there and knew so much about the work. We loved the cat emulating Arjuna in order to gain the trust of the mice! More

The rock carvings in Mamallapuram are the best attraction we found near Chennai. In addition to Arjuna's penance itself, there are half-a-dozen other rock carving sites within walking distance, such as the two shore temples and the five rathas (four temples and an elephant carved out of a rock outcrop near the shore). Well worth a day trip! More

Situated conveniently on the way from Chennai to Pondicherry, these ancient sculptures are definitely a must see. I would also highly recommend a local guide, as our guide was able to explain the stories behind the sculptures and the scenes described. The local area is filled with local sculptors. The one down side is that the goats tend to sleep... More
