These ancient stone carvings are beautiful. We spent the day here on a tour we booked with Mumbai Magic, our guide was excellent and knew all the history about this ancient and well preserved site. If you are in Chennai, it is well worth a visit to this site and a pleasant drive along the coast getting there.

Recently I had been to Mahabalipuram now known as Mamallapuram on my way to Pudducheri from Chennai.
This is a small town which has gained world wide recognition for the stone carvings / sculptures.
It has various historic monuments built largely between the 7th and the 9th centuries, and has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In the Chennai area, this may be the most historically significant attraction. You'd never know it from the way it's managed. It has rather poor visitor access and inadequate protection.
