These ancient stone carvings are beautiful. We spent the day here on a tour we booked with Mumbai Magic, our guide was excellent and knew all the history about this ancient and well preserved site. If you are in Chennai, it is well worth a visit to this site and a pleasant drive along the coast getting there. More

It has various historic monuments built largely between the 7th and the 9th centuries, and has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The monuments... More

I am a little perplexed by how the Unesco World Heritage Sites are chosen. Some in India are truly magnificent (the Ellora and Ajanta cave temples for instance), other seem to be on the list just to make sure that all regions in India have one (like the caves at Elephanta Island in Mumbai). Unfortunately the monuments in Mamallapuram are... More

In the Chennai area, this may be the most historically significant attraction. You'd never know it from the way it's managed. It has rather poor visitor access and inadequate protection. I didn't see a single park ranger while visiting four or five of the sites in the group. There were only two police officers, and they was keeping a low... More
