Did the tour through El Retiro, so we visited the caves that you swim through by candlelight first which is amazing in itself, walked up to semuc champey past a cacao grove where the cutest little mayan girl was selling homemade chocolate. Do the hike up to el mirador (viewpoint) gives u a nice perspective to look down on the... more

Truly one of the world's natural wonders. You have to see the river roaring uderneath it to fully appreciate what a remarkable freak of nature it is. The rock pools are to die for. I saw the images before I went, and I was expecting pretty little rock pools. I didn't expect that some of them are very big and... more

We booked a tour through Maya'ch Expeditions in Coban to Semuc Champey, Kan'Ba Cave, and Lanquin Caves. We were guided (by candlelight!) through the Kan'Ba cave, walking, wading, swimming, and climbing up the stream inside, and afterwards enjoyed a float down the Rio Cahabon in inner tubes. Kan'Ba Caves are operated by Las Marias and are right across the river... more

It is not easy getting there: You get a shuttle from Guatemala City or Antigua Guatemala and you arrive to Coban, the coffee highlands. Then after many hours of... more

We drove from Pana to Coban because we had read and heard how beautiful Semuc Champey was - well, we were somewhat disappointed. While the pools are pretty, it is certainly not worth the trip. From Coban it takes almost 2 hours to get to Semuc Champey (very bumpy ride, do not suggest driving yourself unless you have an SUV).... more

Savvy travelers wouldn't dream of missing this full-on adventure of spelunking, climbing the mirador, and viewing one of the world's magical places. Think of basing yourself in Lanquin at the Pousada Hotel instead of the often booked up El Retiro Lodge where the guests and staff can be too cool for school. more
