The paintings inside, my main reason for visiting the church, are badly damaged, but they're still as beautiful, delicate, alive and excitingly "different" as any I've seen anywhere in the Balkans. They need time though, and unfortunately I'd gone straight after breakfast, when the inside of the church was still rather chilly. Perhaps it would have got warmer later in... More

We sang there during a choir festival. The place is called a cathedral, not to be confused with the size of a cathedral in Europe. The fresco's are very nice, the outside of the building is very representative of what the typical architecture in Macedonia is ; most beautiful colonade outside. We felt it an honour that we were allowed... More

This church was opposite our apartment in Ohrid. It has wonderful frescoes and had only a few visitors at the time we went. It was a hot day and this was a cool place to sit and contemplate the art works and the history of the area

Sveti Sophia in the old town of Ohrid is a gem. it was turned into a mosque by the turks who whitewashed the frescoes but with a lot of effort some of the frescoes have re appeared. really nice to see.

One of only four churches dedicated to St Sophia that survive, I was told, the other being in Istanbul, Kiev and Skopje, this is an incredible blaze of prayer. The frescoes are simply incredible, many beautifully preserved, including a wonderfully evocative panel: "Three Jews in a Fiery Furnace". The apse is mindblowing and you'll find yourself, not for the last... More

Holy Sophia took me back a thousand years, almost. It was a great experience to be able to see this place of interest in such a good shape. Visit it and pay the 100 dinars entrance fee which I think is very cheap for this beauty. The money will surely be needed for maintenance.

This is one of the several sites that charges visitors an admission and denies photos. The interior is cold, cavernous and austere.
