Samuil's Fortress (Macedonian: Самуилова тврдина) is a fortress in the old town of Ohrid, Republic of Macedonia. It was the capital of the First Bulgarian Empire during the rule of Samuil in the middle-ages. By itself the fortress is IMO nothing special, but the road to it and the view from it are just beautiful. Do take the winding streets of Ohrid, enjoy the walk. Arrive at the fortress and get on the walls. The view is priceless, especially off season, during autumn, probably because the tourists are just few and the view changes... More

The fortress primarily consists of the outer walls, so there isn't a lot to see inside. However, the great views over the lake and town make it worth the long climb up the hill.

It's a long walk uphill to the fortress. But you are rewarded with great views over the lake. It was built in the 10th century and parts of it are being restored.

I want now to come back with my reviews to the Ohrid, since we have booked the hotel Riviera there. One extraordinary walk we did one day, during our stay in Ohrid Town. That was ascent along the upward slope and must say not so easy. But at last, when we got to the top of the hill, surrounded with... More

The Tsar Samuel's fortress is situated in the top of the hill, mirroring in the lake Ohrid. Take the car if you can, not walk, it is much easier and you get right in the entrance. In the castle, there are houses and people live there. The entrance ticket is only 30 MKD (0,5€). Use the stairs and the view... More

This fortress has a prime location overlooking Lake Ohrid and the city of Ohrid. The fortress has been renovated pretty recently I believe and besides the walk along the walls of the fortress there isn't really much more to see. I would recommend visiting the fortress just for the view if nothing else.

A decent climb, but well worth it. Breathtaking views and a real opportunity to stop, breath the exceptional air and take in the beauty of this under-discussed gem of a city. Loved it!
