I was a bit disappointed by this one. There are only the ramparts and that's all, no museum inside, no displays, no texts, nothing. The view is good though and the entrance fee is cheap, so why not go? Steep and narrow stairs on the way up and down, so think about the shoes you wear, but that goes for... More

It simply does not make sense to stay in Ohrid and seeing the fortress without going...so we did. And yes it is a hot walk to get up there but the view is magnificent. The fortress walls are to some degree restored and you can walk along the edge of the fortress from one corner to the other and enjoy... More

This isn't a world-class castle--I've been to plenty of those. The lack of interpretive guidance and the relatively unimpressive internal structures (traces of foundations, mostly) account for that. But my family ended up spending over an hour here. The walls can be climbed for over half of the circuit of the fortress, and within that there are places to explore... More

This place is great for the view of Ohrid both sides. There is really not much there except a few empty dark rooms and lots of steps along the wall but, the view on the top is exceptional.

The Fortress gives excellent overviews of the Ohrid in 360 degrees. You can take good photographs and enjoy the walk on the fortress walls. The only thing that is really missing is guide or marking of the buildings that will tell the story about the life behind the doors of the fortress and the power of Tzar Samuil. Well worth... More

If nothing else you'll be rewarded with the most fantastic view of Lake Ohrid and the surrounding community. If you're in to walking (climbing) then go visit the Church of St. John, then walk up to the Fortress and then back down through the winding streets to the center of Ohrid. Absolutely gorgeous!!

We marched our 4 young children up to the fort without many expectations. We were happy with the fabulous views over the countryside and town. Would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good view. Walk through old walls or along lakeside on the way up/down also wonderful. Kids enjoyed the fort but not much there really. This sentence is... More

It is possible for small fee to climb on fortress walls and walk around. You will be rewarded with nice views on surroundings. Actually nothing much to do here, but it is worth to come.

Whatever Tsar Samoil means to Macedonians, for me the main thing was that the name sounded interesting, and that's why I went. (Later I found out more about him.) Anyway, there turned out to be a great view from the Fortress, but that was about it. Otherwise it's just a gate and walls with a grassy space. Still, I'd seen... More

The fort is nothing special. Unfortunately no informational boards are available to describe why this fort would be important and who Samuel was, which would have made for a more interesting context. If one came here after the Roman amphitheater then just look inside the fort from the gates. The views is partly lake and partly new areas on the... More
