Varaždin, Croatia, is a delightful town some 90 kilometers from the capital of Zagreb. Founded in the 12th century, Varaždin sports an extensive pedestrian-only city centre with shops, excellent restaurants and a beautiful castle built and rebuilt over the centuries. After suffering a devastating fire in 1776, the town - having lost its status as capital of Croatia - was... More

Beautiful old town which holds a Baroque music festival in Sept. I went in to look at the museum contained within the Stari Grad. It is right in centre of old town with the outskirts housing the more modern suburbs. Close to Stari Grad are many little cafes for a breakfast coffee or a cold beer. A lovely place to... More

This old castle is in the town of varazdin located close to the centre square. The museum has beautiful collections of China, clothing, jewelery, armour, early weapons to mention just a few. All beautifully presented and the collections professionally displayed both in English and Croatian. You can wander through these displays at your leisure and enjoy the fine collection. You can take... More

Beautiful old castle, renewed to look even prettier. Surrounded by a moat and walkway, loads of elevated places from which you can scour all of Varazdin, and plenty of benches to sit on. There are no places to buy food or drinks at inside the castle area, but all the vendors are mere steps away so it's not a problem.... More

Being in the junction of ancient trading routes, the castle was built in the 15th century in defense against Turks, but remodeled several times by the noble families who owned it. Last by the Erõdy family, who sold it 1925 to the city for a municipal museum. The displays in this museum reflect the cultural history of central Europe in... More

This castle is open to the public and provides a good look back at what life was like in earlier times. The rooms were well done in period pieces, and there were plenty of costumes, and weaponry to look at. the museum takes up all three floors so there are lots of nooks and crannies to explore. We spent a... More

It is a lovely castle, viewed from outside, just like what one finds from postcards and photos. It was rather unfortuante that visiting the town on a Sunday afternoon, the castle was closed and we could not visit the inside; so I cannot give this a higher rating to do it justice. However, the medieval town itself with its well preserved baroque... More

The old castle was definitely the highlight of our visit to Varazdin! The building is simply beautiful, and we were amazed by the size of its collection. There were many more rooms to explore than we realized! There is not much information in English, but it is fun to explore the different eras that are represented throughout the displays, especially... More

I was surprised that castle (indoor) is closed on Saturday from 1pm and on Sunday. It also true for other sites in Croatia and not convenient when one is here for business and wants to visit museums or historic sites on weekend. However it worth to see.
