A fantastic excample of conservation of architectural heritage. Though the atmosphere is slightly aseptic and sanititised, the quaint Shaxi ancient town is a fascinating place to visit. Walk down the cobbled streets, peep into or explore the old houses, purchase trinkets and see the unique Chinese batik prints being made on bedspreads, cushion covers and clothing here. A briliiant performance... More

We were so relieved to find a beautiful small village in China that had not been turned into a Disneyland-esque place. We spent 5 nights just enjoying the quiet, peaceful village and scenery. There are many places to walk in the mountains and in surrounding villages. The Friday market is great fun to see the goods, foods, and locals coming... More

To walk through a gate and imagine the tea horse caravans heading from Dali to Tibet, to imagine them staying in the village inn where my husband and I had to duck our heads to enter our bedroom with its wooden shutters, and where the clear water ran down the open drain beside the path after a rain storm -... A walled city. One of friends needed to visit hospital for a bee sting treatment. Although a military hospital, service was excellent. Lots of places to eat. INternational bank machines operate well

At last we could smell something more authentic and not only done for mass tourism... we loved it! Far better than Lijiang or Dali

ancient town still in its original form, with a restored temple (hundreds years old, with 300 year old trees). do stay in any of the inns which are in the town itself. if you like trekking, do spend a few days here going on the many treks to the grotto, another ancient town, etc

China is a bit of a Disneyland, since all of the old towns start to look and feel similar after a few and since they all seem to sell the same one of a kind nick-nacks...hmmmm?

This old town is some 1 - 2 hours' drive away from Dali old town; but what a huge world of difference! This is far less commercialized, with less kitschy tourist shops and far less crowded. Rather what you get are buildings that are authentically old, and shops and restaurants that locals themselves still patronize. Yet, it is not without... More

This place is heaven on earth! It's a tiny town in the middle of a valley. It's not easy to get there, you have to catch at least 2 buses from wherever you go. But it's really worth it. The old town is just 4 or 5 streets. They keep the same style they used to have houndreds of years... More

Jim's car took us via Shaxi on our way from Dali to Lijiang. It is a beautiful ancient village off the beaten tourist track. We had delicious dumplings in the main square, then went our separate ways to explore. My husband got lost in the winding old streets, then could not find anyone who spoke any English to help. He...
