This wonderful 1,100 acre tract of land is just minutes from downtown Birmingham. It's wonderful trails bring you to great views of the city, historic mining relicts as well and peaceful private locations. Visitors to the city as well its residents need to plan a trip, even a short one, to this quite gem. more
Ruffner Mountain Nature Center is a great place to hike and if you enjoy birding there are a wide variety of birds to be seen. Ruffner Mountain can be accessed from the Birmingham side, which has the Nature Center, or the Irondale side, on Ruffner Road across the street from Ruffner ball park. They are currently working on a new nature center, so there is a lot of construction mess, but it is still open! It is free, though donations are accepted. I highly recommend... more
I hiked the Marian Harnach Nature Trail which was okay but nothing special. The best thing here are the beautiful owls caged outside and the turtles and snakes located in the visitor's center.
