Longmen Grottoes were built around 493 A.D., about the time when Emperor Xiaowen of Northern Wei Dynasty moved the country's capital to Luoyang. Visited Longmen Grottoes on 8th July. Very historical and in a lovely setting. Over 100,000 Buddhas carved into the limestone rocks. The bigger they are, the more significant. Hard to imagine how the people carving them have done it. Hanging over walls for hours on end no doubt. Magnificent and detailed. Worth going to. There are steps to mount but... more
