When I was working in Beijing in 1993-1995 I took a trip to Hammer Rock, which we called the Big Thumb. I see in extreme closeups in some of these reviews from 20 years later that there are short fences to provide a little safety from falling off to certain death. One reviewer said they didn’t think they were tall enough.

When I was there, there were no barriers at all and I agree these shown are totally inadequate. I tried to stay in the center of the narrow, rocky, surface but others with less fear were running around and scaring the crap out of me. I couldn’t wait to get down. Previously, I had not been afraid of heights but that all changed that day.

If you are at all frightened about being just a few feet away from falling hundreds of feet down with little in terms of rescue or medical care hours away, I’d encourage you to view the mountain from afar. (Please note the time of my visit is incorrect according to my only choices.)

The Sledgehammer peak, can be seen from most part of the city and we just wanted to challenge ourselves with an hike. The taxi driver let us off by the cable car entrance, it was 50 one way and 80 for both ways. However we had decided to walk. We got pointed in the right direction by and started off.
It is a really nice hike in nature and some parts with steppes they have made. Alone the way you can stop and take very nice photos of the Sledgehammer and the nearby mountains.
We ended up spending 4 hours in total as we brought snacks and made a stop on the way and a longer stop on the peak.
When walking you will pass another Stone Mountain called frog rock, from there you have to walk down a lot before you walk up up up to get to the peak. This part is quite steep.
Almost on the top there is a resting area with a nice pavilion. On the peak it self there is not room for many people and it was super windy when we were there. Because there were not many people we could actually sit up there for a while and enjoy the view from every side of the peak, having the city on one side and just mountains on the other side.
The way down was shorter and we walked through a little village.
I am glad we did the trip and would recommend it.
There was a lady selling water by the frog rock otherwise where you get of the cable there are also area to buy drinks and icecream.

If the ski lift is closed, as it was when I visited, don't let this put you off! A hike from Puling Si (Puling Temple) to Hammer Rock, and then back down the path near the chairlift to Anyuan Temple will take around two hours.

I wasn't sure if I could be bothered to do this, but I am glad I did. The rock is very impressive, as are the paths and views. The drop from Hammer Rock is quite scary mind!

To find the correct path down from the chairlift, you need to exit the scenic area spinning gate and walk towards the chairlift station. Just before a raised pagoda and before the chairlift, turn away from Chengde. The path heads down away from Chengde down concrete steps. After a while it reaches a road and does a u-turn back towards Chengde town.

Visited the Qingchuifeng (Sledge Hammer Peak). It was really nice and the cable ride up was really scenic esp in spring when flowers are in bloom. The scenic area is well maintained and the hike up to the Sledge Hammer Peak ("SHP")is quite steep. Best go in the morning to avoid crowds because the top of the mountain where the SHP is located is quite narrow and the side barriers are very low. If any person slip or fall in front or at the back of you, it may cause fatal accident.

Our group included my wife and I, our 2+ year old daughter; and my brother-in-law and sister-in-law and their 1.5 year old son.
We arrived in the morning, it was just starting to get warm.
There were the normal vendors on the way to the entrance, but much less than more popular tourist areas like Beijing.
You buy a ticket to go in, keep the ticket! It is your pass to get back down.
We were almost the only ones there this morning, but they are prepared for large crowds as long as the entrance maze was. Most seemed shaded.
To me, the most fun part was the modified ski lift to the mountain. They direct you to the stand in front, and as the chair bumps you, you sit down. A 'cross bar' was added that you lower over yourself to hold on to. An inverted 'T' is welded to this bar to rest your feet on. The ride is said to be 45 minutes but it went quickly as it is a fun ride. The toddlers rode with their respective parents, being held on laps. It crosses a couple ridges where your feet can drag if you try to. My wife kept her's on the bar, thereby losing a few fun points. The ravines aren't deep, the deepest one looked to be about 30 feet deep.
Being with toddlers, we only went up the first couple flights of steps to a gazebo to take some pics. The actual Sledge Hammer Rock is a bit of a walk after the lift. If we didn't have kids, and had thought of more water, we would have gone on up to it.
I would go back without young ones to continue up to the Hammer, or to show others.

We took the cable car up expecting to see the hammer rock from close. However once on top they ask 50yuans more to access to the rock + Pule Temple and the walk back in. You can't see the rock once you're up, it's hidden from your sight.

So just be carefull prices are :
- 50 one way cable
- 80 both ways
- 50 for hammer rock and Pule Temple.
Know that you can walk back from the cable car by a little path that the cable car guys can show you.

For us it was not worth it, the prices are already expensive in Chengde we didnt want to spend 100yuans more for a rock.

A slightly strenuous hike at times, but the views of the surrounding city are worth it. We walked down instead of taking the cable car and it took quite a while and was through countryside neighborhoods but a fun walk down.

Supposedly 42mins to ascend and descend according to the tour guide. But we took about 2 hours to complete the hike including taking stops to take photos. The thumb of God looked amazing from far at different angles.
The hike was quite a challenge as there were some inclined flights of stairs. Wearing comfortable shoes is a must to ensure unwanted near misses.
As we nearly reached the thumb, there was a wide area to rest and to take scenic photos of the natural surrounding and other mountains nearby.
Safety is the top priority when you are at the "peak", as the less than 1 meter height "rail" is not good enough to prevent anyone from falling off! But the feeling of being so close to the "thumb" is indescribable.
If you are not into hiking or travel with kids or elderly, you can opt for cable car rides (50 yuan for one trip, 80 yuan for return trips).
