There was a time when Praca XV was at the heart of a powerful and progressive empire, the center of pomp and pageantry. Now it's so deteriorated that it will be hard to resuscitate. A revitalization is possible, but seems implausible. A pair of important complexes face the square: the Carmelite churches and the Paco Imperial. But there are aging,... More

This square was much quieter than Cinelândia and Largo da Carioca, both of which were near the major subway stations. It was rather peaceful because of many trees in the square. It’s amazing to know how a garbage disposal site was transformed into a historically significant square and used for the coronation of Brazil's two Emperors (Pedro I and Pedro... More

Saturday mornings. The most bargain-possible location in the whole of Rio. You can find that long, lost, left shoe lace or 17th century Portuguese Faiana pottery piece being sold side by side. Don't miss it! Snooze you lose...

Great place to have lunch and seize the view of Guanabara Bay. The ancient restaurant ALBAMAR, good food, but the most is the view.

When the king of Portugal fled his country, afraid of Napoleon's might, he made this building (Paco Imperial) his home. Its a place filled with history and there is a small museum inside where you can read about the importance of the square and the building.

Excellent spot with lots of history - great little streets to walk into with outdoor restaurants - if you didn't know better you'd think you were transposed into some area of Portugal in summer with everyone enjoying good food and drinks while listening to live music!

Many beggars, dirty smelly streets, dangerous at certain hours. Few attractions, tourist shops more expensive compared to other regions such as the Saara.
