Petropolis is a very nice town that served as the Emperor (Pedro I e II) summer residence because of it's climate much milder than in Rio. It is located only 50 miles from Rio but the ride up and down has some great views of the Atlantic Forest and water falls. The city is now overpopulated, but is still charming... More

Petropolis is a peaceful and quite place! actually i think is the most safe place in Rio. The name comes from of the summation between Pedro ( Portugal King ) + Polis ( cidade ) = City of Pedro. Some people called of Imperator city beacuse the Royal Portuguese Family lived in this area for years.

.... We found out the hard way. Cute little town but wouldn't spend longer than a day or two there. Lots of history and colonial architecture to appreciate. Everything is closed Monday and Tuesday so try to avoid wherever possible going on these days. bohemia brewery looked really nice (from the outside....).

It´s name originated from Dom Pedro II still in the monarchy era and that is why it´s called the Imperial City.It is said to be the first planned city of the country, There are many gorgeous houses and it´s full of details and beauty - it´s not a place to move fast and the museums and old houses are to... This is a nice day trip from Rio. Easily accessible. Very safe. And, it is home to the Portuguese crown jewels in the summer residence. Our Brazilian friends love coming here. We thought it was nice, but one trip is probably enough.

The trip up into the surrounding hills was a great start. The very humble and well kept palace shows a part of Brazilian history one does not expect. The pride the Brazilians is shown in their care of this structure.

Petropolis is an amazing mix of European architecture and style, mixed with Brazilian culture and living. The views on the drive from Rio are breathtaking and the city and historic districts are unbelievable. Anybody traveling to Rio should take a day trip here, or even better spend a night, you won't regret it.

If you have time to spare, I'd recommend this day trip to Petropolis for a change of pace and scenery. The town is nested in the mountain range approx 120km inland from Rio. The history of the town is quite interesting as well as architecture. Some nice palaces to visit in the town. The ride there and back also very... More
