If you're trying to leave the city behind for a bit, Petropolis is a great option. The very European style architecture, especially of the Imperial Museum, is rich with history.

Petropolis is a Beautiful colonial town one and a half hours drive from Rio. The drive is incredibly beautiful, and you can visit the neighbouring towns of Teresopolis and Friburgo. The road between those last two is VERY beautiful and special, with small treks, waterfalls and attractions like a honey factory, horse farm and an artist who carves his works... More

We went on a day trip with a tour, stopped to have a look at a german style villa: Palacio Quitandinha (now privately owned), visited the Imperial Museum (Palace) and walked around the gardens, stopped at the cathedral and admired the beautiful stained glass and ended the tour with a walk around Crystal Palace and its park. It think it... More

If you can take a drive to Petropolis, then go and see what it is like in a smaller town nestled in the forest hills north of Rio. There are several attractions here, so there are interesting things to go see like the beer factory, various gardens, the very intriguing Santos Dumont house, and of course Teresa Street for shopping...a... The visit was great in getting to know about Brazils pre independence past, visiting the royal castle and lake as well as the museum. The museum, which used to be the house of the Portuguese royal family, is wonderfully preserved with 90% of the original artefacts still in display.

I love it. I went with a friend and we spent the day there visiting different places. We went by bus at around 10 and we got back on the same day.

Petropolis was founded as the summer home for the Portuguese and Brazilian royalty. The temperature runs about 20 degrees cooler than in Rio, which is a blessing in the hot summer and the fall. It's a 40-80 minute bus ride from Rio's main bus terminal, depending on traffic and construction. The city is like a US suburb or small city.... More

Maybe we were affected by the rainy weather, cool temperature and leaky bus... but the first stop was at a German village style house... the second at a renaissance palace (or classical...not sure now) ...it was interesting to see the european style villas in the city around - but it's not the thing you travel for across the globe...(if you're... but if, like us, you are not, then there is not much of interest. It is also over an hour's drive from Rio without a lot to see along the way. In retrospect, I think our morning would have been better spent staying in Rio.

Petrópolis is a mountain city very close to Rio, about one hour away... It´s interesting, with it´s museums and palaces, that provide us a good entertainment by visiting them. It was the place for the summer vacation to the D.João VI.´s court.
