Petropolis is an interesting town less than two hours away from Rio de Janeiro. The best way to go is joing a daily tour, easily found at hotels. Petropolis has many attractions: Imperial Mansion. Crystal Palace, Bohemia Breery, Santos Dumont House , Cathedral, as well as other places to strollas every major attraction is within walking distance. While getting close... More

We took organized daily tour from Rio because we traveled with 8 months old baby. Another time I'd go on my own, more complete and flexible visit. Petropolis was interesting to us because it's different than the rest of Brasil. (we are living in the northeast part) Architecture of houses is european because Petropolis is built by german immigrants. It's... More

We did a day trip to Petropolis. There is a Bohemia Brewery that offers daily tours. That was an interesting way to kill an hour. We also visited the Royal Mansion (interesting) and the big church (not quite as interesting). The cool thing (literally) about Petropolis is that it is 10 degrees cooler than the weather in Rio. The old... More

This summer getaway of the Emperor and his court is worth the visit. In spite of the unplanned urban sprawl, the center still maintains the charm of when the Emperor and his family got away from the heat and humidity of Rio de Janeiro, so spend time at their country cottage. The imperial palace is a wonderful site as well... More

One of the nice sites about 1 1/2 hours from Rio. Nice Drive and interesting sites. It was the summer capital of the portuguese empire with all the museums to prove it and there is a house of Santos Dumont (the guy who invented the airplane according to Brazilians)

My first wife and I visited this place to escape the summer heat of Rio de Janeiro. It is a beautiful small town in the mountains. It has incredible history including a museum of the last Portuguese ruler of Brasil. It's always worth a visit.

If you are looking for a trip outside of Rio, Petropolis is definitely a great choice. It has a charming european royal atmosphere. One can learn a lot about the royal family in XIX. century in Brazil. Nice and quiet, with pleasant climate if you want to escape from Rio's humidity. Beautiful parks and good restaurants, and also great Bohemia... More

Unfortunately, the tour to Petropolis, organized by Grayline was not what we expected and far from everything written in the reviews. It started with a delay of one hour from the one that was communicated to us, due to some problems to the bus, that after 15 min we changed again.. Then, a 1 hour and a half of a... More
