My first wife and I visited this place to escape the summer heat of Rio de Janeiro. It is a beautiful small town in the mountains. It has incredible history including a museum of the last Portuguese ruler of Brasil. It's always worth a visit.

If you are looking for a trip outside of Rio, Petropolis is definitely a great choice. It has a charming european royal atmosphere. One can learn a lot about the royal family in XIX. century in Brazil. Nice and quiet, with pleasant climate if you want to escape from Rio's humidity. Beautiful parks and good restaurants, and also great Bohemia... More

Unfortunately, the tour to Petropolis, organized by Grayline was not what we expected and far from everything written in the reviews. It started with a delay of one hour from the one that was communicated to us, due to some problems to the bus, that after 15 min we changed again.. Then, a 1 hour and a half of a... More

It definetly worth the visit, if you have some time should go uphill and visit the historical city of Petropolis, with its houses, palaces and museums telling a bit of the history of Brazilian colonial and imperial periods. The visits are well organized and multilingual guides are available in some specific atractions. Also the climate is very pleasent and it... More

After a bit of a hairy bus ride we arrived in Petropolis relatively intact. Getting there in fact couldn't be easier. A taxi will take you to Novo Rio bus station where you can buy tickets at the Unica Facil desk. The central sites are all with in easy walking distance or you can jump on a horse and cart.... More

I was in Rio when it was really hot and humid. Hired a car and driver to take us to Metropolis, where the emperor and his courtiers went to escape the heat. What a lovely place! Some good museums, lively parks, and surprisingly good sushi!

Petropolis is a Imperial city nearby Rio dvelloped by the emperor Pedro II. The Imperial Museum is excellent and one of the most visited in Brasil. Petropolis is about 50 miles away Rio ina very good road. You go and come back in the same day.

If you have time while visiting Rio de Janeiro, Petropolis is a lovely day trip. I would recommend hiring a tour guide (see Rio Alternative Tours and ask for Vicente...he's wonderful!) I know there are also Gray Line tours that run on Tuesday and Thursday. Our free day was a Wednesday, so we couldn't get the Grayline tour. It may... More
