After having been to Copacabana we went to Ipanema Beach and were surprised to find how different these two beaches are. Ipanema is a sandy beach with clear clean waters! On the day we went there were really good waves, ideal to have some fun in the water! Easy to rent chairs and a beach umbrella. Also there are lots... More

Great beach, wide and long, fine sand. Water is great, decent size waves to play in. Beach chairs and umbrellas available every 50 meters along with cold drinks (beer and pop). It is quieter than Copacabana, still on the busy side. Food and souvenirs vendors are present but not pushy. A great place to spend a couple of hours in... More

Leblon, Ipanema and Copacabana. Three most famous beaches in Rio from the fanciest to the touristy - as can be read from every guide book. I walked each of them from one end to the other - and the difference is not big for a tourist. In each you can find the footballers, the families and the sun worshipers. There... More

Famous for the song sang by Frank Sinatra, this white sand beach is still trendy. A little smaller (although big, both in lenght and width) than her neighbor Copacabana, it is also a little more "chic". You can rent parasol and chairs, we paid 20 real, or around US$ 5 for all. Lots of joggers, bikers, surfers and several others... More

Ipenema beach was a very nice place. We were riding around that beach on bikes, which we renter. I forget what they are called, but they are great. You can register online, pay, and rent a bike for a whole day, with breaks every hour, when you have to return a bike, and take another one. Bikes are great idea... More

Adjacent to Copocabana and enjoy the beach and walking on the crystal sand. On a Sunday there is a hippy market in Ipanema well worth visiting.

Didn't spend any time at Ipanema but did drive along for a look. It appeared to be busier than Copacabana but attracts a better croud. Again, very clean with plenty of bars and restaurants. There is plenty of trendy she's for beach wear here - maybe better than its neighbour?

Ipanema is one of the most traditional beaches in Rio along with Copacabana and a must see however it is not the best beach. The best beaches are Grumari, Prainha, Receio and Barra in that order. However they are much further away from the hustel and busted.

I preferred Ipanema to the other many beaches in Rio. Defo better than Copacabana. The streets are slightly more secure and there is a nice open market on Tuesday.

Staying in Ipanema

Neighborhood Profile
Ipanema
Ipanema is considered Rio's crown jewel. It offers the best view of the sunset from Arpoador and is inspiration for the legendary song, “The Girl from Ipanema.” Ipanema is an upscale area, home to many high-end restaurants and luxury shops, many of which can be found on the charming Garcia d'Ávila Avenue. The neighbourhood is very rich culturally, housing many art galleries that show contemporary art. There is also a great variety of nightlife in the neighbourhood, which buzzes with many options for every taste.
