It's a big beach but I think Copacabana is better although there's less people in Ipanema and even less in Leblon

It´s a very nice beach, but it´s full of annoying peddlers and must be very careful with your stuff.

This is one of two most known beaches in Rio, and for a good reason. The beach is wide and the sand is fine. There are lots of beach vendors who will offer food and drinks. If you have any questions regarding the nightlife or good restaurants, they are very helpful as well. Mojitos and Caipirinhas are quite pricy, at... More

We went several time to this beach during our stay in Rio and I must say that we strongly prefer this beach to Copacabana beach. My advice is to stay in this area that is safer than Copacabana.

This beach is by far better than Copacabana beach. It's cleaner bigger and newer and much much better looking people (and much younger crowd). They also have a very good section for the gays right in the middle between station 8 and 9. This area also has a lot a really great bars and restaurants to go to afterwards. Lots... More

Typical beach that has many bars along it that take advantage of the views. It is a it quieter than Copa and hence is not as lovely but a bit more sedate to sit and sip on a drink and enjoy the quiet views. Worth a visit though - we walked from central Copa easily enough

We visited Ipanema during world cup time. There better beaches as to sand, water, landscape - but Ipanema has a soul. The atmosphere, the cool-but-not-too-much water, waves are fun landscape is great people are fantastic and the cordiality of the Cariocas makes being in Ipanema a spiritual experience. One has to be there to understand. You do not want to... More

By far, my favourite beach in Rio! Ipanema has a very glamorous reputation in Rio; It has a more laid back vibe than Copacabana, as well being much cleaner. The Ipanema area is quite affluent, which is reflected in the type of people that frequent the beach (i.e. lots of beautiful rich people), but don't let that put you off,... More

Be on time on the rocks at the beginning to watch a beautiful romantic sunset. You need to be there before 17 hrs not to mis it and have a good seat.

Pros - amazing views with mountains around, international beachgoers, volleyball, soccer/football, beer stands everywhere, bars near the beach, chairs for cheap rent, etc. Cons - water not clear, but hey, its not the Caribbean!
