We went to visit the Theatro Municipal, purely on trip advisor comments and it exceeded our expectations! It is a little confusing buying the tickets though, when you arrive and you walk through the gates on your right, there will be a guard you have to obtain a white ticket from him for the English Tour. These tickets are only... More

If you're looking for a taste of "classic" in the middle of Rio de Janeiro's center, you can turn to Teatro Municipal. It stays in Cinelandia, where you can find it monumentally in a place, if a subway exit almost in front of it (making easy to make it there). Total worth the time! Just pay attention to when they... I agree with all the positive comments already made.....and add that I was fortunate enough to attend a free concert by the Brazil Symphony Orchestra in the evening. What a wonderful experience in the beautiful building. Well worth the effort to visit.

This is a stunning must see in Rio. I went on an English speaking tour at noon (there was only one that day, so check in advance). The guide was excellent and really personalised the visit. It is a gorgeous building inside and out and the history is fascinating, both of the original build and the restoration. Cost was R$10... More

We were luck enough to catch an English guided tour. Check in advance as to when they are available if you only speak English. Great building and we caught 10 minutes of an opera rehearsal from the first row in balcony. Theater is totally restored and worth the visit.

We took the tour of the theater, there is a tour in English every hour on the hour from 12 - 4 pm. Very nice tour and a beautiful building.

Delightful ballet performance. Cultural response was to cheer for ballerina who stumbled & recovered. No stuffed shirts here! Check out the marble bathroom.

Beautiful building. Unfortunately didn't manage to get inside despite having tried on three different days. Worth noting that over the carnival period that some of the best places to visit are actually closed.

Take the metro and the station is Cinelandia. Unitario ticker for Metro cost 3,2 reales. Dont take a taxi, Metro is really safe to use (at daylight). Eight blocks from here you have the "Scadaria of Selaron", another excellent place in Lapa.
