The museum itself has an impressive collection but is a little disorganized. The most interesting thing is the building itself (once a residence of the Portuguese royal family after the seat of government was removed from Lisbon to Rio).

This museum is located at a beautiful very important 200 yo building that belonged to the Brazilian monarchy and has an incredible collection with itens over 4 thousand years old. Too bad they are poorly exposed, with little or no information. I understand the museum has been maintained and organised by the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, but it... More

it's a long walk before you can reach there from the station. Fortunately we passed through the garden which has canopy and we can stay away from the sunshine. There are no tour offer in the museum and only Portuguese explanation showing on the exhibits.

We went to Quinta da Boa Vista because we wanted to see this museum, it was totally worth it! It has a great natural collection (from butterflies to dinosaurs!) plus other collections like the egyptian one which was impressive to find there.

Expected to see something bigger, but not too disappointed. Unfortunately dint know portugese so could not follow anything, it had few mummies, dinosaur skeletons, meteors, things from Amazonian tribes etc which was interesting to see. U can cover the whole in 1 hour.

This is a museum in the middle of a beautiful park, few meters from the Rio ZOO - I recommend to visit the park, museum and ZOO together. The building of the museum is an important part of the Brazilian history. The entrance is reaaaallyyy cheap and the museum has high diversity of the expositions - from dinosaurs to Indians...... The Museum is located at Quinta da Boa Vista park, in the building that originally was the royal`s family house. They entrance to the museum is very cheap. But, the place don`t look very well conserved (looking at the walls and roof that contains part of the history of the place). Unfortunatelly the upper floors were under reform and inaccessible... The Museu Nacional is one of the oldest museums in the Americas, created in the late 18th century and it has one of the world's largest collections of Natural History, with almost 20 million objects. The Egyptian collection, one of the largest of its kind outside Egypt, is impressive, with its dozens of mummies and well conserved sarcophagi, the Greek... More

Not much to see, I guess it depends on what they are showing, but generally its below average. Access through Sao Cristóvão.

Mummies, dinosaurs, indian culture, and much more can be found in the Museum, that once was home to Brazil's Emperors. Just a walking distance from it, the must-see Zoo is really nice. Don't expect a very good structure, but focus on the animals. Birds, snakes, monkeys and much more!!!! Take your kids and have fun!
