I am really ashamed for this review but I must tell the truth. Paqueta was one of the most beautiful places in Rio back in the 80's. But, now it doesn't have anything to offer the tourist as it has been overrun by pollution and slums

This island inside Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro, used to be a nice place to visit. However, it seems to be fogotten by the local authorities. The sea around it is too dirty for bathing or fishing, and there's nothing to do, besides riding one of the bikes available for rental.
Take the horse drawn carriage tour. An oasis in Guanabara Bay. This island is home to many Brasilian actors and artists. Even has a bird cemetary.
It´s a pleasant trip across the sea to this small island with no motorized vehicles . The day I went the sea around the island was actually orange and stank of sulphur. Go - but leave you swiming costumes at home
Avoid weekends the beaches are beatiful but poluted, the island has a lot of nice colonial era buildings but the island lacks care

The Paquetá Island is a place of little interest. Beaches with polluted water. For the traveler with a few days in Rio de Janeiro is not the best option.

It's nice that there are no cars so the transport options are horse drawn carriages or bikes. There were lots of people on the ferry...

Its recently been cleaned up so that it is once again accessible for swimming, its a beautiful island, with friendly inhabitants just 45minutes by ferry from Praça XV. It has some nice family activities like the pedalinho.
I lived there for 12 months and have visited many times before and after. I have a love for Paqueta which is not always realised on a first visit. You have to get to know the island and the people who live there. 1 hour and 10 minutes by slow boat from Praca XV (Centro Rio) and you are in...
