Disclaimer: I grew up there, so I do have a bias towards Urca....if you are visiting Rio and have a bit more time to spend, go for a walk around Urca, its shore and inwards streets, very nice view from the bay and doing the right planning ( setting in advance) visit the Fortaleza de Sāo João, on the footsteps... The neighborhood just below Sugarloaf in one of the classier in Rio (not as crowded) but the views of the golf are amazing. Tried a couple local bars as well (Urca and Garota de Urca) and spent a couple unforgettable hours in Urca

The best place to have some beer and hangout with friends. The neighborhood it's calm and cozy. You should head to the final bus stop, that's where most people gather to have beer sitting and staring at the sea.

You can't ask for much more: right at the bottom of the Pao de Açucar (Sugar loaf) this lovely neighborhood can take you out of the city's chaos. You can go to a little nice beach, walk trough the nature or just simply sit down and watch the sunset while eating ice cream. There are not a lot of buses... More

URCA is a beautiful part of Rio. More off the beaten track than Ipanema, Copacabana et all, URCA is a more 'representative' district in Rio where you have a greater chance of interacting with Cariocas. Nice beach, great restaurants and lovely view of Pau de Acucar. A must see whilst you are in Rio!

A small area in Rio, a nice stroll after visiting Sugar Loaf. It is a very expensive neighborhood with fine examples of Art Deco buildings in Rio. Despite of missing a seashore visitors will not be disappointed with the calm atmosphere and beautiful views of Urca.

make sure you get to Urca on a Sunday and you can go and hang out with all of the local Brasilians to watch the sunset. It's a beautiful spot and there is a place called Bar Urca there - this is where all the locals meet. Highly recommended. Easy to get to on a bus - just ask for... More

Really beautiful view, I love the walking up the first mountain. It was easy 45 minutes and saw small monkeys. Do the first mountain and hike it from there you can take the elevator. buy tickets for the second mountain downstairs

The visitor to Rio de Janeiro typically goes here for the sun, beaches, and excitement if Carnaval, samba, Bossa Nova. It seems impossible to find anyplace that has little traffic and the noise of the metropolis. But there is such a place and surprisingly it is in the very heart of Rio. It is a quiet neighborhood of family homes... More
