This fortress is well worth the visit if you are in Rio. Parts of it are an operational military base, so photos are restricted to the "tourist" side. Views of Rio are excellent, and the fortress has many interesting points of interest, including the lighthouse, the jail, the chapel, and the artillery.

A trip to Fortaleza de Santa Cruz calls for the best part of the day if you really want to experience the area. I didn't read any reviews before I went and glad I didn't. It was a quick ferry ride to Charitas from Praca XV then we grabbed a taxi (17 reais). We did the tour which was done... More

It's free to visit the place and the navy ship is open for visit. It's interesting for those who have not been to any military site. There is a helicopter and some good souvenirs too.

Nice destination with great views. Unfortunately the guide only in Portuguese. I imagine the history to be interesting.

Fortaleza de Santa Cruz has beautiful views which (maybe) is worth the trip. But get ready for the boring guide (at least the one I had) who sped through the memorized explanation like no other. You are better off visiting Forte de Sao Luiz where the views are way better.

Santa Cruz is a superb fortress in the entrance of Guanabara Bay. Some parts of it were made of sand and whale oil. The visitor will have a magnifent view of Rio de Janeiro. The monument also has several attractions, with many historical facts related to the last five centuries. There's another fortress, newer than Santa Cruz, on the top... More

The views are great but there is always a guide with you that doesn't give you enough time to enjoy the beauty of the Sugar Loaf Mountain and the Guanabara Bay.

One of the many "Fortes" to protect the entry of the Bay from atackers, the Fortaleza is worth the trip for the view and the history. You can drive to it - from Rio cross the bay using the Rio -Niteroi bridge and drive the coastal beaches until you hit the mlitary road tha leads to the Fortaleza. You will... More

The Fortress of Santa Cruz is located on the other side of the entrance of Guanabara Bay, in opposition to the Sugar Loaf, and Urca and Leme neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro City. Fortress has a wonderful view of Rio de Janeiro and the beaches of Niteroi (Icaraí and Boa Viagem). The Fortress has service guided tour that tells the... More
