We went to the fort in a couple of occasions, one the hard way and the second by car. The hard way is to take public transportation and then walk three miles or so, in our case under a scorching sun and 95% + of humidity. A great piece of history can be appreciated from here. The view of Rio... More

If you are going to Rio and don't mind crossing the bridge and visit Niteroi, as long as its not raining and its daytime, go and visit this Fortress. They offer a guided visit (in Portuguese) to the Fortress, which is active until today. You won't visit the barracks or anything like that, only the historical part with the cannons... More

I owens let my guests to know this place when in first time in Niterói. This is a militar quarter, then you must have car and at entrance you must show your documents for a soldier. Inside you find commerce for coolers and restaurant.

It´s a good place to have a view from the entrance off the Baia da Guanabara. The ships come closer to the fortress and it´s available a guided visit in the fortress.

I went there with my wife and our 3 years old boy. This is the oldest occupied Fortress in America. Since 1555 there is at least one soldier there. The very cheap 6 reais guided tour really worth. The complex contains two active Brazilian Army units: the Headquarters of the 1st Division's Artillery and its Support Battery. Both units fought... More

The fort dates back to 1555, so plenty of history. Only 1.5km from the fort to Sugar loaf across the Bay. Great photo opportunities. The fort has many old canons pointing out towards the Bay. The fort still houses active military, so the buildings are kept in good condition.

Great visit in this place! We waited in line for almost an hour to be taken by the guide. It only offers guided tours, which is excellent, because you find out many things while having the walk inside its walls. Amazing views and imposing architecture. Loved it a lot!

This is one of the most beautiful and impressive forts I´ve ever been. The location, construction and history impress every single turist. It´s in the entrance of Guanabara Bay, in front of the world famous "Sugar Loaf", giving us the most terrifc view. The history is full of details and interisting facts, being part of many important moments of Brazilian... More

Very professional guide with excellent knowledge, stunning fort and scenery. My wife and I caught the ferry over to niteroi from downtown Rio (praça 15) and then a bus which dropped us off at the last beach before the fort. We walked a further couple of KM after this so would recommend getting a taxi from niteroi to take you... More
