I saw the Itaipu Lake as part of a tour of the Itaipu Dam. While it is essentially just an artificial lake the views here can be quite spectacular.

It was really amazing to go through such a beautiful lake and a dam.It generates 14000mwts of electricity for Brazil and Argentina.Surroundings are also maintained with beautiful plants and flowers.

There is a restaurant next to it and some ferry but basically...an artificial lake. To be seen when coming from the dam but otherwise not a destination in itself.

Do the special tour and learn about the history of the dam. Have found in Brazil that if you only speak English you tend to have your own private tour guide. Our girl was so lovely and spoke excellent English. It was as good if not better than the Hoover dam!

Know that Lake buried one of the wonders of the world? The "7 Quedas" lie beneath the waters. Waters that drowned thousands of monkeys, jaguars, trees ... The environmental damage it may be necessary for industrial development but it is a real shame.

Very nicely build and huge structure worth every penny that was spent on it. It was also very organised and you can feel the power on it.

Itaipu Lake is a very calm place, but somehow far from any other attraction. There is a lot of nature and the water is not cold.

One wonders about the multi-talented geniuses that walk this planet. Everything seem to be in place to harness this flow of water to generate electricity to service the country.

It's easy to see why the Brazilians are so proud of this dam. It's a huge feat of engineering. But the scale of the project makes you question what happened to all the people who must have lived in the area when they flooded such a huge area to create the dam. It's great though that 100% of Paraguay's electicity... More
