A must-see baroque church

This is one of the most beautiful baroque churches in Brazil; the paintings in the ceiling are amazing, so are the saint images;

The work of Aleijadinho is not to be missed. This church is a prime example of Brazilian baroque art.

One of Aleijadinho's masterpieces (the other being the 12 Apostles at Bom Jesus do Matosinho in Congonhas, MG,) a Baroque jewel inside and out, a gem against a back-drop of verdant hills. Check out every detail. Ouro Preto at its best!

Learned a lot about the Brazilian artist, Aleijainho. Loved the colors used inside the church. The museum that is included in the basement was very interesting. Can see many Catholic items displayed in the museum. There are only a few English descriptions on the signs, so take someone to translate for you. Beautiful!

There are more than 12 churches in Ouro Preto where life was good when plenty of gold was found. Some of this has been used to create some nice pieces of architecture. Try to limit the number of churches of three, and this is the one you may not miss.

The painting on the ceiling of this church is awesome, but the church is abandoned by the city, despite the R$ 10,00 necessary to enter (kind of pricey!). The attached museum is small, and the outside of the church is full of overgrown grass, broken or missing pavement, and is apparently a hobo bathroom! More care is necessary, after all... More

A proof that even a small, well-designed and decorated building can eclipse grand structures. One of 3 small churches in Ouro Preto with an outstanding colonial design. A must see! As in all churches in Ouro Preto, you can't take pictures there...

I liked the history and the the roof paintings. I didn´t dislike anything, except the fact the cemetery that is beside the church was closed.

This church was one of the places I liked the most in Ouro Preto. If you don't have much time, save some for the church. The paintings from Master Athayde are astonishing. The church architecture itself and the view from the stone market are also very beautiful. Its architecture is a little different from the others, an unique military style.... More
