We visited the lake during our Amazon River cruises, and whilst we were a little disappointed that we didn't see a greater variety of birds and animals, the highlight was a large family of Capuchin monkeys on the elevated board walk close to the lake where the lilies are found.

Janauari is beautiful! Lots of bugs though since its in the solimoes and the area is so very fertil. Incrediable Victoria Regia plants and amazing birds. Lovely trees and one has a chance to feel like being in the jungle and yet be so near Manaus.
Shopping, not nature is the focus. The boats and drivers were helpful, but not being far enough from Manaus limited the amount of wildlife possible.
This is a great nature preservation area right in front of Manaus (how the locals term the area on the other bank of the Rio Negro, facing the city).
