the beach itself always seemed packed with tons of people trying to sell you something. i really didn't like the area, for a few blocks in from the beach that area didn't look safe at night

It's an urban beach so you can't expect it to be like a paradise beach. But it's a nice one and you have greatbars there.

I was in a beachfront hotel in Pajuçara but this very animated beach seemed unsafe, lots of poor people walking around (not enjoying the beach, please don't get me wrong) and as a tourist I felt like an easy prey. A bit outside of Maceió, beaches are amazing and peaceful.

Avoid Sundays. Too crowded. You can also book a trip in a Jangada (local fishing boat) to the natural pools.

The beach itself is not very good, it is dirt, polluted and has too many vendors. But the the natural pools are beautiful and worth a visit. You can't miss it.

The best place to eat and to buy gifts in Maceio. Don't miss the craft fair.

Despite being a good location, the beach is unfit for bathing. There are rides in small boats to natural pools, away from the beach. But virtually all the other urban beaches of Miami are unfit for bathing too (see www.ima.al.gov.br in services - bathing). In the region there are good hotels and access to several restaurants.
