One of the best theatres we have been too outside of New York City. First rate performers, set, selections of plays.

We've been season ticket holders at the Barter Theatre in Abingdon Virginia for several years, and we've seldom come away from a production there with anything less than great praise for the show we've just seen. Some of the best have been such shows as Sweeney Todd: the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Ring of Fire, My Fair Lady, Educating... More

barter was started in the depression when actors had no ffood and farmers had little entertainment o one could trade food for a play today cash or credit only for quality performances by equity players. We really enjoyed Les Miserables in 2013 and Wizard of Oz in 2014 there are two stages so one can find something of interest either... More

I have attended the Barter Theater frequently because I am attracted to it's history and excellent productions. The transformation back in time starts with a view of the exterior, then the lobby with photos of actors hung on the wall and finally the auditorium with it's rich architechural details. Then it gets even better. Visitors are welcomed and special occasions... More

I've wanted to see a play at the Barter for years and finally got there last weekend. My husband and I saw Driving Miss Daisy Friday evening and My Fair Lady matinee on Saturday followed by Sherlock Holmes on Saturday evening. It was an excellent weekend. The actors are amazing, our favorite being Miss Bevins as Miss Daisy. The intimacy... More

Saw Driving Ms Daisy in smaller venue, Barter II. Have to admit I am a sucker for intimate theater where you can almost taste and feel the performer with no room for error. Ms. Daisy, Mary Lucy Bivins, was just outstanding. Until I read the program at intermission, I thought she was probably in her 50's or 60's, which she... More

What an incredible find in this tiny hamlet of a town. EXCELLENT production with choreography, costuming, singing ability, acting and the like typically found on Broadway. This is a MUST see if ever in the area.

I have always wanted to experience The Barter since I grew up in Virginia. What a special day it was - snow on the ground, catching up with family, eating lunch at the cafe across the street, taking a stroll through the Martha Washington Hotel and gardens, and then relaxing to a first rate performance of The Hound of the... My family and I have been to three plays at the Barter. All three were fantastic. Amazing props and stage designs, accommodating staff, and a little piece of history sums it up. The Christmas plays are always wonderful.
