Tour of the fort is really interesting, but you can discover many interesting things on your own on a self-guided tour as well.

First, full disclosure... I've visited Fort Macon State Park for over 60 years. The Fort is very interesting and well maintained - and the small beach off the Fort (adjacent to the inlet) was nice. The Atlantic Ocean side beach front facility is a terrific place (with good parking) - to do a day stay. Showers et al. One of... More

What a nice park, and it is free. New information center added in last couple of year. Lots of parking.

Took our teenage boys here and there was plenty to see and learn about. We really had no expectations other than seeing an old fort. There are many talking displays and the information is interesting. The fort is well maintained and free to enter. It is great for older kids but would be difficult for younger kids and seniors or... This free museum and fort was a great break for my kids. It was hot at the fort but there are quite a few rooms with artifacts that are air conditioned. There were lots of ramps which were stroller friendly. Even my little kids loved looking at the artifacts and displays!

Fort Macon. Recommend guided tour. The staff was informative. The volunteers were great. The view of the ocean from the fort is something to see. The brave men who were stationed here over the time the fort was active.

Fabulous historic site. Restored fort used before and during Civil War. Robert E. Lee was there in the 1830s.

Staying near Atlantic Beach I was asked to take a young man (elementary age relative) to see Fort Macon. As a lover of all things historical, I was eager to return to Fort Macon where I first learned of the 'Pearl Harbor of the Atlantic.' They have a map showing the dozens of ships sunk in the first six months... More

What a great place to view how our fore-fathers built and defended this country against its enemies. The displays in each of the rooms were very well done and I thought each was very appropriate in telling about life in the fort and the various groups that had used the fort throughout the years. A very good place to take... More
