Our recent visit to Emerald Isle was almost frustrating, when we discovered that the majority of the island is COVERED in homes and condos and there is very little public beach access. However, Fort Macon State Park really saved our day! Hidden at the north end of the Island, Fort Macon State Park offers a large public parking area with... More

We randomly went to the state park and wow, the fort was beautiful! Take your camera and enjoy the green grass shots. The history is intriguing and the fort is something to see!

Good, free and easy historical site to visit. Interesting history and you can walk all over it. Be careful as there are no protective barriers. Sign says it was built for war, not safety!

Fort Macon State Park has a beach with bath houses, concession stand and lifeguards. It's where the locals go. You'll find a beautiful clean beach that borders the park, and curves around the point of the island. Set up your beach towels and umbrella near the lifeguards if you want to swim. If you want solitude head up the beach... More

I love going here to fish and watch the big boats & yachts coming into Morehead City port. Swimming and wading are not allowed, and this means fewer folks to work around when casting/fishing. This little gem is perfect for us, and we've been in Oct., Nov., Dec., Jan., Feb., June and July.

We knew we would get some history here, we didn't know we'd have so much fun and that it would be one of our favorite stops on our Outer Banks Adventure! Truly a wonderful NC State Park! Great exhibits within the fort, and the fort itself, that it's open for exploration in just about every area, makes it a great... More

Fort Macon is a free historic site you can tour and get an idea of what life was like in a military fort during the Civil War. There's plenty to see and it's a must see for Atlantic Beach. There is a beach access so there's something for everyone.

On Wednesday during the summer they have canons at 4:00 pm to mark the end of the day. Very cool. Our kids liked it and the cute little museum inside the visitor's center.
