Great history!

If in the area and looking for a free thing to do this is a great place to check out and see history.

Went to Fort Macon on our last day of staying at Atlantic Beach. I have 3 children - all of whom enjoyed the interactive exhibits. Some of the more precious items were in glass enclosures so I didn't have to worry about the little ones touching things they weren't supposed to. Great way to end our trip to the beach.

We had only 1/2 hour before closing to see the fort. We wished that we had more time to visit each of the exhibit rooms and explore the grounds more. Entrance is free - we highly suggest a donation. The visitor center was modern and had displays of history and artifacts. The renovated 1826 fort protected the coast line through... More

Visited here during Memorial Day weekend during the last hour of their opening (4PM) and really wished we had more time. Due to it being later in the day we were already spent, but there was much to do here! Site is free and they provide guided tours on certain hours. If you're a history buff there's tons of placards... More

I am not a huge fan of National Parks except for the Washington, DC experience. However, Fort Macon is a gem!! Having been to Sumter to the old fort, I totally expected ruins with little else...oh, how wrong I was!! The preservation here is superb and the exhibits in both the Visitors' Center and the fort are overwhelming awe inspiring.... More

An awesome way to spend an hour or two or the entire day. The visitor center is good for a quick visit. Make sure to catch the movie that explains the forts history. If you have more time the fort tour is self guided and worth the extra time. Each individual room is air conditioned and very interesting. Walk through... More

We love the Fort Macon State Park. The natural beauty, the history, the way it is maintained and cared for are all excellent. The fort is a fun place to explore and get a sense of history. The dunes are great for walking and enjoying the fresh sea air. Every time we go, we end up taking great family photos.

This place is a national treasure. The welcome center is top notch and beautifully done. Love the doors. Great gift shop and video. The frt itself is just amazing and we always come here when we are in the area. Love walking around and thinking back to the days when it was a fort.

I made an unplanned stop here and I was very glad I did. The fort is amazingly well preserved. The fort was in use during the Civil War, Spanish-American War, and WWII. They have displays and info for each of these eras. While I was there they also had reenactors performing and firing the cannons.

Fort Macon is an amazing part of Eastern North Carolina's history. Not only a Civil War Historic Site, troops were also billeted there during WWII. The beach across from the Fort is not a swimming or wading beach due to currents but, is a favourite for fishing or walking. Some of the dunes are cordoned off as this is also... More
