The Fort Macon staff goes above and beyond to entertain. We saw a musket shooting reenactment that was amazing, presented by a bearded, wool suit wearing park ranger, who gave the appearance of being directly from the civil war. He spoke eloquently, and told us everything there was to know about the musket, how soldiers had to fight and load... More

This is not one of the famous Civil War sites, but it is beautifully preserved and very well displayed. There are many rooms in the fort that are little mini-museums. There is a great film about the history of the fort, from the building to the use in the Civil War by both sides, to the Spanish American War, to... More

Went on a cloudy Saturday when the beach wasn't appealing. I knew zero about the fort or its history but was pleased to learn about all of it through the introductory video and wealth of exhibits set up throughout the fort. The NC Park Service has done a great job restoring the fort to its Civil War appearance and nearly... More

Fort Macon has an intriguing history and many interesting historical artifacts relating to the fort on display. And there is also a gift shop as well. The ciews from the top of the fort are nice and scenic. If you're a history buff you'll want to stop here. Admission is free. Plus there's a public beach not too far down... More

I spent a few hours hiking in the park with my young son and we had a lot of fun. To help keep my son engaged and entertained during our hike, I found an interesting iPhone app called "Git Your Goat." It lets you create a lot of goats along the trail and when you reach the spot with a... More

Fort Macon is an old natural fort from the civil war years. Recommend seeing because you can go about everywhere on and in the fort. When they do the firing of the cannon is a can't miss event. Very informational with there guided tours.

My husband and sons are very interested in historical sites, usually they bore my daughters and myself however the entire family loved this place! We were lucky we went on a Wednesday and they shoot a cannon every Wednesday at 4. A very nice volunteer guide took us around and told us all about the place. He was very informative... More

OMG you just have to go here. It is not a place for small children it is very much a fort. There are places you can fall very easily. I was in love with the place the minute I walked down the hill to go into the big doors. Just a wonderful place to visit.
