This is a terrific, approachable place to visit with kids. It's at the east-most edge of the beautiful Fort Macon National Park. Parking is good too.

Fort Macon is a must see when you're in the Atlantic Beach area. You can spend as little or as much time as you want....it's FREE! They have done a wonderful job of restoring this fort and do a wonderful job explaining its history. NOTE..... Keep an eye on your little ones, it has some steep drop offs!

Very interesting tour through the Fort. Everyone should see this. Walk around on the top of the fort and you can see for miles. There was a salvage ship a ways out and numerous other boats. The place is well kept and you can go on your own or take the guided tours. There is also a beach area across... More

Check the daily schedule for free tours, it's well worth it! Our tour guide, Judy, was very knowledgeable. It is an educational tour and lasts about 45 minutes. The fort, the grounds, the visitor center, and the exhibits within the fort are all very interesting.

A definite stop on your visit to Emerald Isle/Atlantic Beach area. The Visitors Center is very well done and the documentaries about Fort Macon run almost every hour. The park rangers are very helpful and eager to answer your questions. A walk through the actual Fort Macon fortress is humbling.

The displays and tour, put on by volunteers, are very informative. Enjoyed it, even on a very hot day.

We visited the fort with no real expectations. We found a modern, air-conditioned reception building and a well-kept 19th century fort that our young (8, 6, and 3) grandchildren really enjoyed. Many of the rooms in the fort walls have been restored to the way they looked during different periods, from the early 19th century up to World War II... More

The Fort Macon staff goes above and beyond to entertain. We saw a musket shooting reenactment that was amazing, presented by a bearded, wool suit wearing park ranger, who gave the appearance of being directly from the civil war. He spoke eloquently, and told us everything there was to know about the musket, how soldiers had to fight and load... More
