We were at nearby Emerald Isle and had an overcast day and took a ride to the fort. It did not disappoint. Educational movie inside, gift shop and exhibits and the fort itself was interesting. The grounds would have been a good place to sit outside on a nice day.

This is a fascinating tour and extremely well done. As a newcomer to the area, it was very interesting to hear the history from the 18th Century to the present.

In addition to the fort itself (spanning 1820s-WWII), there were very good exhibits in the casements. Some were artifacts in traditional cases, but other casements were set up as the quarters they would have been during the various periods which really added something to the feel of the place.

Wonderful place to learn a bit of NC history. Great for the whole family. Nice place to sit on the beach and listen to the surf. Check for times of reenactments, they are very entertaining!

Great information on the fort throughout the park. There are lots of solider/war exhibits to look at. There is also a 30 minute video on the history constantly playing with a nice shop across the hall. The fort is very open & literally " the fort was built for war, not safety". I would not take kids less than 5... More

I've been going to this site since the mid 1950s. It's been recently renovated. A must see for Civil War buffs.

The fort has a wonderful center with a great film on the fort's history. In between showings, the screen displays a video tour of the entire fort and it's environs. There are lots of period displays as well as a very nice gift shop. There has been a fort on this site since colonial times.
