I'm a self confessed Civil War buff... if I'm anywhere near a site I'd probably stop to check a drainage ditch to see if it was a trench, it my wife would let me. No need to explain the history, others have done it well. The Visitors center is very nicely done, agree on seeing the movie before your tour.... More

Fort Macon has a large, comprehensive visitor center with a theater that continually shows a well done video that should be seen before entering the fort. Built in the early 1800’s after 8 years of construction, Fort Macon was garrisoned on and off before, during, and after the Civil War. It became a state park in 1936 and during WWII,... More

If you have any interest in history, Fort Macon is a site you must visit. It is nicely restored and presented in period artifacts and has recordings explaining its' function during different periods of history. Also is great for photography.

My sister and I went to Morehead City last summer for vacation. While there we went to Ft. Mason to check it out. Very nice. Right on the beach and full of history. The fort is interesting to tour as well as the walls that make it. There is a museum/gift shop in the park also. I like this area... More

This is a terrific, approachable place to visit with kids. It's at the east-most edge of the beautiful Fort Macon National Park. Parking is good too.

Fort Macon is a must see when you're in the Atlantic Beach area. You can spend as little or as much time as you want....it's FREE! They have done a wonderful job of restoring this fort and do a wonderful job explaining its history. NOTE..... Keep an eye on your little ones, it has some steep drop offs!

Very interesting tour through the Fort. Everyone should see this. Walk around on the top of the fort and you can see for miles. There was a salvage ship a ways out and numerous other boats. The place is well kept and you can go on your own or take the guided tours. There is also a beach area across... More

Check the daily schedule for free tours, it's well worth it! Our tour guide, Judy, was very knowledgeable. It is an educational tour and lasts about 45 minutes. The fort, the grounds, the visitor center, and the exhibits within the fort are all very interesting.
