OMG you just have to go here. It is not a place for small children it is very much a fort. There are places you can fall very easily. I was in love with the place the minute I walked down the hill to go into the big doors. Just a wonderful place to visit.

We go to Atlantic Beach every year. Every now and then, we will go to Fort Macon as a thing to-do. Sometimes, you will get a guide that loves being there and will give you a lot of information. Other times, it is a long hot excursion that leaves you feeling that you should have stayed on the beach.

Been coming here forever, every summer for 43 years. Can't believe it's still free, always drop some money in contribution box to keep it that way. Now that I have small children, I can't believe they haven't placed safety rails over deep drop-offs. Multiple areas that need them...I know they want to keep it original,but...we'll it takes my breath to... More

We came across the fort while driving on a rainy day. We enjoyed the visitor's center and museum and were thrilled that the fort is free to visit. It is best to leave the stroller in the car. There is really no place to ouch them. The fort has amazing views of the ocean and the tour guide is a... More

This visit to this historic fort was completely fascinating and I am soooo glad that we made this part of our visit to Atlantic Beach! If you decided to go, make sure you pay attention to when the guided tour begins.... because our guide was both highly informative and very interesting! The fort has amazing history and significance to the... More

It is very informative and all staff were nice. Great and fairly priced gift shop. Seeing the cannon fired on Wed afternoon around 4pm was one of my daughter's favorite things

Fort Macon is a must see for anyone visiting the southern outer banks of North Carolina. Our boys (<10) love seeing the canons and running along the beach. The beach across the street is part of the Beaufort inlet, where the remains of Blackbeards ship lie beneath the surf. Great place!

Fort Mason is a fort built on a point. It is fun to walk through the fort and seeing how the people lived there. The beach is a nice way to picnic and spend and afternoon. One time when we were there we saw dolphin's up close from the fishing pier. They would come out of the water almost in... More

This is a must do for kids and history geeks like my wife and I. It is free, has a great view of the water, and most importantly VERY informative of how the troops lived here. It breaks down what daily life would have been like and just how bad it really was to be there during the war. When... More
