The whole story of Halicarnassus is quite interesting and Bodrum is built atop this ancient site -- often using stone taken from the mausoleum, the gate, and the city walls. Bodrum Castle has been so well restored; it's a shame that they can't do more to restore things like the gate -- especially given that they have quite detailed plans... More

well signposted . You can see ruts in stone road from carriages of Greek times. Adjacent is series of family graves in hotel grounds. You can wander next to the sunbathers on their loungers admiring wonderful mosaics. You can stand on the substantial city walls of Halicarnassus which are thousands of years old. See the rock-cut moat where Alexander the... More

The Myndos gate site was restored and cleaned up some time ago and is still kept very tidy. It makes a very good visit for guests not up to longer more strenuous sites.

We like Bodrum. It's a very cosmopolitan tourist sea-port, and very pleasant to explore. Plenty of good shops and restaurants to choose from. Crowded and noisy at times, but I enjoyed being there. However, considering its history, there are surprisingly few historical sites worth seeing in town. The Castle of Saint Peter, with its internationally-famous Museum of Underwater Archaeology is... You need a good imagination to see what the walls and gate would have been like when first built, and unless you are staying nearby it really isn't worth the effort.

Long walk from the town centre and little to see. Free - but the only thing to see is 2 piles or bricks. NoT worth the walk
