the fish market is medium sized where all fish caught in maldives ends up. you can see all types of fish being sold, cut and cleaned. its interesting to watch the locals and the fish too. you can pick up any fish and take a foto with the fish in your hands.

While there are not a lot of high points in Male the Fish Market was worth the visit just to watch the fish cleaners. These guys took any fish that was offered and for a fee cleaned it expertly and efficiently. Always great to watch someone excellent in their craft.

The variety is a bit limited, consisting of mostly... More

It's certainly a questionable hygiene eye opener but none the less, it's a nice way of seeing the local fisherman at work. You can see the whole market in 5 minutes so if you have time to spare and need some 'culture' different to mosques and beaches, go here. I was expecting a far greater variety though, go with low... If you wish to catch a glimpse of Maldivians' daily lives, look no further than the Male' Fish Market. Here, the foot traffic peaks in the afternoon as fishermen from the entire country sail right up to the edge of the market and unload the daily catch. Tuna is there most popular fish for sale, but you'll find some other... More

Besides tourism, the Maldivian economy relies on fishing and so visiting the fish market is a brief (you need <10 mins) way to see that side of the country. Really fun to see.
