Address
Neighborhood: Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.

We loved Hiyoshido. The therapists were so professional and the experience very traditional. We were given traditional pajamas to wear which were so comfy and modest for people not keen to bear all. We both felt great afterwards. We were lucky to get in as we didn’t book so I’d recommend reserving an appointment.
Highly recommend Hiyoshido. Would definitely go back. Arigato

This place is hard to find but when you do it was incredible! A must for all your travelers logging many miles a day exploring Japan. Located in the back alleys of Gion. If you don't have gps on your phone don't even bother trying. We found it, made a reservation in person, went to dinner and then had trouble finding it on our way back! But when we did me and my fiance had a 1 hour massage easy for about $45 each and I think tip was included in that. Great staff and facilities. One of the highlights of our trip!

$75 for an hour a half full body amazing massage by strong, skilled therapists. Take me back!! You will be given clothes to wear, they ask you what hurts, if anything, and cater your massage to your needs. I was with 2 friends and our massages, positions, etc were completely different. I prefer firm, beat-me-up king of massage as does my friend, our third friend prefers a lighter touch, all three of us were floored with our massages. The sweetest space, sweetest staff, peaceful environment, authentically Japanese. Loved it so much I hugged my therapist (Japanese folks aren't very physically affectionate with strangers)!

Don’t bother trying to make a reservation unless you are a local from Kyoto. Tried walking in to make a reservation and was ignored by the receptionist and then told to try coming back in person again in 2 days just to see if I can make a reservation with no guarantee… it seems they were too busy with locals to be bothered by foreign tourists at this time. I’m sure the treatment is great for those lucky enough to experience it but seems very exclusive.

I worked in luxury hospitality for 5 years and was pretty surprised at how bad their customer service was for a reputable spa, I felt very unwelcome.

I had high hopes for this place after seeing such positive ratings and reviews. However, I was deeply disappointed with my experience. Normally I am someone who never wants my massage to end, but in this circumstance I was counting down the minutes until it was over.

I will begin by saying that the massage itself was good, but my massuse made me feel extremely uncomfortable and on edge. He continued to comment on my appearance and body throughout the massage, saying comments such as: “cute face”, “gorgeous girl”, and that I had “cute” legs and a “good design” (when massaging my buttocks). Moreover, when he helped me with some stretches, there was one when you spread your legs apart. As I did this stretch, he said “sexy pose” then abruptly corrected himself to “yoga pose” when I visibly displayed my discomfort through my facial expression.

I was so uncomfortable after my massage that I wanted to speak to the manager about my experience . However, she was unavailable and the girls at the reception didn’t seem to understand much English so I left the store with the matter unresolved. I felt so helpless especially being in a foreign country that I couldn’t help but cry as I walked back to my hotel room.

Ultimately, it saddens me to say that I could not recommend this service and that I hope nobody will have to go through the same experience as I did.

Dear Gloryjoyce, Please accept our sincere apology. We are very sorry to learn that your experience with one of our therapist was not good. It was clearly a mistake at our end and he should not have done that. We understand your frustration at having the most uncomfortable massage experience. We take fully responsibility for the situation and already spoke with him and terminated him from work. In this case we failed. We should have trained our therapists so that they understood that under certain circumstances they should know their limitations with customers. We will assure you that this kind of situation will never happen again. We will set a meeting and will strongly discuss about this matter. We are very glad for bringing this to our attention. It is a lesson learned for all of us to improve our services. Thank you. God speed.

I am a university professor (b. 1942) from New York City. My Chinese wife (b.1974) and I are on vacation. I made a reservation and explained that I had circulation problems. Later I called back and asked that my masseuse be female as I am not comfortable with men messaging me. I was told this was not possible and was informed that only men massage men. This is very unusual in Asia. For more than 10 years I have received health massages for women. Consequently, I would not recommend anyone use this spa.

I'm sorry to trouble you. It's not possible to choose therapist male or female (random way) when shop is busy. I ask for your kind understanding. Thank you.

This was so much more than "just" a massage! I chose the two-hour course (¥10000) and it was worth every yen. My therapist gave me a deep massage along with full-body stretching. The service was impeccable- which I have come to expect in Japan- and I could not have been happier with my massage. Just GO!

The TripAdvisor reviews were correct - Hiyoshido is an excellent choice for a massage in Kyoto. We had the 2-hour “long course” a much different type of massage than we are used to - through (gargantuan) pajama type clothing with lots of acupressure, stretching. The two hours flew by in what seemed like 45 minutes!

Very friendly staff and beautiful facility - May be a little hard to find as it is located in basically a small walking street/alley in Gion but very clearly marked and close to the main shopping/ dining area.

Definitely recommend!!!

We recently returned from a one week trip to Tokyo and Kyoto. In Kyoto, we stayed in a ryokan and got around on the bus and by walking. My wife and I were looking for a way to rest our feet away from all the tourists with a little peace and quiet. We found this small place on a side street in the Gion area of Kyoto with the help of Trip Advisor. We walked in without an appointment and they told us to come back in one hour. A two hour massage was 10,000 yen which is less than $100 USD. The therapists were able to speak limited English, but just knew what parts of our bodies were the most sore and tight. It was the best $100 spent and a perfect way to end our trip.

Thank you very much for coming to us. All staff members are very glad that you could restore your health and we could cure your feet. Although a few stuff members can talk fluently in English now, we have some English conversation lessons to accommodate customer's requests. Please visit us to cure your fatigue when you come to Japan again.

Very nice place to get a massage. The hostess had decent English, but my therapist barely spoke any. My wife's therapist was very fluent in English and asked her in detail how she wanted her massage. I'd give it 5 stars if I had the same experience, but it was very nice nonetheless. I was able to schedule an appointment the night before, but I think it's easy to walk in as it's very secluded. Definitely recommend using gps to find it.

This is located within the popular Gion district, so it's a very nice area to walk.
