This has been my favourite temple that I have come across in all of eastern Kyoto. You are welcome to walk around inside most of the rooms in the temple and where you can sit and find some peace away from the busier temples and shrines. It has a magnificent garden that is very photogenic!

A great place to sit and ponder. The temple is very nice and had a nice cool breeze. It was quiet and nice to be away from the crowds. The grounds are nice and the garden has a nice bamboo area as well. Recommend visiting here.

Nice, peaceful and quiet sanctuary. We have been there on a rainy day and it was so relaxing. You have to take off your shoes and then, following a little itinerary, you can go around on your own. You can visit the beautiful garden too. Not the most quoted and famous temple, but it deserve a visit. Perhaps even because... More

It's a good choice to visit this temple rather than other nearby, 'cause it's less crowded but wonderful at the same time. I suggest you to sit on the tatami to look at the garden, before walking through it.

During my visit in the afternoon the place was not crowded and I had the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful garden in silence. I took a great pictures and will definitely visit again, if I get the chance.

We visited Shoren-in Temple as part of our Narawalk Premium Tour and this was one of the highlights! The gardens are beautiful with well cared plants and trees, some hundreds of years old. The landscaping is natural and beautiful. The backdrop is a natural forest along with black bamboo to one side you can walk through as well. The buildings... More

If you're looking for a stunning little temple with gorgeous gardens, which is also mostly free from the crowds, this is the place to go in Kyoto. Located next door to the busier Chion-in Temple, Shoren-in is quieter, more peaceful and more relaxing. Take the time to sit down, relax, and enjoy its surroundings.

A great spot to sit back and soak in the beautiful gardens and temples- worth a visit and likely to be less busy than the other big temples in the city. We went in late afternoon and it was quite peaceful - bliss!

wow! this is a nice temple! it has a beautiful garden and traditional Japanese residence. The sliding doors are beautifully painted and the garden is so peaceful and beautiful. I would recommend this temple as it is very different to other temples i saw in Kyoto and lacks the big tourist crowds which when it is so beautiful seems crazy... More

This was probably my favorite temple experience in Kyoto. It was so peaceful. They have a lovely tatami mat sitting room where you can just sit, view the garden, and relax. It was quiet and not as crowded as most of the other places I went (although I went first thing in the morning). I highly recommend it! I wanted... More
