I went to Shoren-in on the advice of a friend. Compared to nearby sites such as Nanzen-ji, this one is a quiet little place. Tranquil and calm. Love it.

The garden of this temple is as good as they all say. Absorb the Zen calmness. If you are in Kyoto presumably you want to experience temples and this is one of the best.

A beautiful, calm and traditional temple with lovely gardens and grounds. Lots of different rooms to explore a peaceful place to visit.

This is a real gem and is especially nice since it doesn't attract hoards of tourists--quiet and beautiful. Of course, if everyone followed my recommendation, there would be hoards of tourists.

Went here with high expectations after reading so many rave reviews...at first we thought we must have stumbled into the wrong temple! The gardens do not come close to any of the majors the temple itself is average at best. Would strongly suggest leaving this one off the list unless you have plenty of time on your hands!

It would be a good idea to start your day by spending some time at the temple. Its a very peaceful and good for meditation. You can walk peaceful temple premises, hear the birds and soak in the tranquility which is hard to find in big cities.

This has been my favourite temple that I have come across in all of eastern Kyoto. You are welcome to walk around inside most of the rooms in the temple and where you can sit and find some peace away from the busier temples and shrines. It has a magnificent garden that is very photogenic!

A great place to sit and ponder. The temple is very nice and had a nice cool breeze. It was quiet and nice to be away from the crowds. The grounds are nice and the garden has a nice bamboo area as well. Recommend visiting here.

Nice, peaceful and quiet sanctuary. We have been there on a rainy day and it was so relaxing. You have to take off your shoes and then, following a little itinerary, you can go around on your own. You can visit the beautiful garden too. Not the most quoted and famous temple, but it deserve a visit. Perhaps even because... More
