I visited this zoo in Kyoto on my recent trip. While Kyoto is a lovely city, the zoo was terrible. Many of the large animals such as the lions and tigers were in extremely small enclosures and the temperature was very high. The tiger was panting and attempting to pace in his small accommodations. All of the animals appeared miserable.... More

This zoo is very old, the space for the lions and tigers so tiny. The animals look very unhappy, Even if some areas are under renovation, it's a shame for a rich country like Japan to have such a place.

My family visited and we were all very saddened and upset by the terrible way the animals are treated. The cages are cruelly small and the animals are lifeless and sad. Please please do not go to this zoo. If you do you will be supporting cruelty to animals. I beg the zoo to vastly increase the size of the... More

This was the most horrific zoo I've ever visited. The animals were kept in tiny cages, and they all seemed underfed and liveless. The birds aren't able to fly and huge animals like lions and tigers have no space neither. The hippopotimus had a tiny pool and just on the other side of the fence they had made a huge... More

One thing that made this zoo interesting for me is to see the gorilla. I was curious how will it look like in person. Apparently it made me stunned and amaze because they were real! On the contradictory we were not able to see the eldest animal at the zoo which is the black bear, due to the cold weather.... More

This place should be shut down. The animals are caged, stressed, tropical animals are huddled on heat rocks shivering under plastic bins, and the big cats look half starved and full of sores. After spending about a half hour there, my daughter spent the rest of the day fantasizing about rescuing all of the animals and sending them to the... More

We felt really confronted by this. The tigers were in a terrible state, and the Jaguar was detained in a room no bigger than a standard western bathroom. Really sad and sorry place. The Japanese tourists seemed to love it though. A few months ago we visited Singapore zoo which was awesome. The zookeepers in Kyoto need to do the... More

This is probably the worst zoo I've ever visited. Seeing the conditions these poor animals were forced to live in was just depressing.

We wandered into this zoo as it was near our hotel in Kyoto. It was absolutely horrific. The brown bear was obviously injured- with his hind leg unusable, dragging itself around its cage with an awful despairing look in its eyes. The other animals looked underfed and desperate. Only made it half way through before getting too upset to continue.... More

I have to admit that I did enjoy this zoo a lot, particularly the proximity to the tigers and was going to write very positive things about it. However reading the other reviews does make me realise that that would be a rather selfish approach. The cages are too small, though the animals did not to my unexpert eye like... More
