A stunner! We were getting a bit templed out and then decided on just one more; so glad we did.
We preferred this side of Kyoto and felt it was less crowded with tourists. Probably the lack of coach parking helps...

We visited the temple ground and ended up eating lunch at its dining hall. Quite an experience as tofu soup was cooked on your table.....

I liked the atmosphere at the night illumination but I thought the koyo at Eikando was not as impressive as other places like Nanzenji, Tofukuji and Daigo-ji. Best to reach there early. I was there at least half an hour early and there was already a crowd of about 200 people in the queue!

Beautiful and extensive temple, and the "left looking" Buddha is alone worth the trip, a shocking and moving piece of sculpture.

Visited Eikan-do during peak foliage season. Large groups of visitors, as expected. Apart from the brilliant display of Red Maple leaves, the Temple is also famous for its cultural treasures, notably the statue of the "Turning-Back Amida". Wonderful views of Kyoto from the Pagoda up on the hill-side. We chose to spend time at this attraction instead of several other...
