Ryoan-ji is a truly lovely place. The Zen garden for which it is famous is indeed a calm and thoughtful place. Apparently many Japanese people think so too, because it was swarming with visitors when we were there. But everyone was fairy quiet and respectful, so it never felt noisy or wild.
