My wife and daughter had a great experience with this. You can hire a kimono/yukata for the day, at around 400Yen; depending on which outfit you chose. However, you need to return at 5pm before the shop closes. So the best time to go get your outfit and makeup done is probably right after lunch. That gives you ample time... More

Yume Kyoto allows you to hire a kimono/yukata for the day, at a cheap/reasonable price! (About 30$ and return is at 6 or 8pm - you can also extend the hire at an extra cost) I did this in winter (January) with my boyfriend and his mother. Men and women can do this - there is male style kimono too.... More

We visited Yume Kyoto on 15 June 2013, took a day trip via Nozomi from Tokyo. Many travel agencies in Indonesia do not offer this kind of experience so I was excited when one of my friend in Tokyo offered to take me and my family there. The staff spoke good English, they offered many varieties of Kimonos and Yukatas... More

We rented Kimono for the day and walked around Kiyomizuji and area. The prices were fairly reasonable and you could have your hair styled for a small extra cost.

Very convenient location in Gion, excellent service, communicative English. Make a reservation in advance as they are very popular. Yume Kyoto offers kimonos in different designs and colors for men and women. It only costs 3,500 yen to hire a kimono. They will assist you in dressing. Basically you make your own choice when you arrive: kimono, purse, sandals, obi... More

Staying in Gion

Neighborhood Profile
Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
