We only had time for one temple when we left Tenryuji and I picked this one based on the Tripadvisor photos. It was a bit of a walk but there's lots of little restaurants, cafes, and shops along the way. We arrived at 4 and the temple closes at 4:30 but it was just enough time and just enough light... More

Of course, if you find it as a peaceful place to meditate, it's OK. If you want to see some highlight, it's not. There is NOTHING to see. I normally take hundred of photos. I took TWO here. They charge you 500 yens (more than Golden Pavilion) and you get nothing. Try upper Temple just 900 meters away from here.... More

This temple is a good walk up a hill, but if like us you aren't rushing you'll enjoy the meander upward passing little shops and tourist bits on the way up. If you have access to google maps that you can follow, there are two ways to access it, we took the suburban route up to look at the modern... More

We didn't have a ton of time in the Arashiyama area, so we got a fast train to Saga-Arashiyama (there are a few every hour that take about 15 minutes from Kyoto station, free on JR pass, no reservation needed), and then got a taxi. I picked up a map of the area at the ticket gate and showed the... More

It takes a bit of effort to find (not that much with the right directions from locals) and the site is quite small, but it is worth it. The statues make it very different from the other many impressive temples in the Kyoto/Kansai area. Apparently its a sad place to pray for the dead, but as I am not very... More

It's a bit of a walk from the main Arashiyama site but well worth the wander. There is a children's shrine, which is very sad, but behind it is a beautiful bamboo grove, with a stairway leading through it. As the place is very quiet, and because of the distance, there is an opportunity for some lovely photos.

The temple is sacred, sad … different from others indeed. It is opened to public include tourists. But I, personally think it is absolutely not a place of going off a pleasure trip, but for only prayers (includes tourists who are willing to pray and see … of course!) with sincerity can visit. To appease aborted or miscarried fetus’s spirits,... More

Adashino Nenbutsu-ji is a Buddhist temple on the outskirts of Arashiyama. It is a very peaceful walk up the main road. The grounds are nice and can be viewed rather quickly. If you have walked this far from the main Arashiyama area, keep going up the hill to see Otagi-Nenbutsu-ji, that is definitely worth seeing.

This place is special. It's different to the other temples. There are less people so you can even enjoy some moment alone in the middle of the bamboo forest. It's not easy to reach, but with a map and with the help of the locals you can make it (we don't speak Japanese, but people helped us anyway).

Not much is in English at this temple/graveyard so if you decide to go, read up on it prior to getting there, not much to see although there is an event that is held once a year which may be interresting (they light candles and put them on all of the gravestones) but I didn't see it. Not really worth... More
