It's a wonderful bike ride around the wall. (not an easy ride, but a rewarding one) If it's sunny out there is no shade since you are on a wall, so sun screen up! (I didn't...) Huge city wall, its impressive to see how big of a city they had so long ago.

The Xi'an city walls form a complete rectangle around the center of the city, with a circumference of about 8 miles. Bikes can be rented up on the wall, and the ride around the wall is well worth the hour and a half to two hours that it takes. The cobblestones are bumpy, and you'll want to stop to look... More

We loved visiting the intact wall during the day and then seeing it lit up at night. So nice that it has been preserved.

A walk on the wall that surrounds the city was quite interesting. You can see the differences between the areas and the buildings (from small rather old houses to big blocks of flats) that shows the financial differences between areas. You can also try a bike ride in a romantic afternoon

I would have loved to have the time to cycle around the wall which would have been very easy so if you have the time you should do it. We wandered around the base as well which was great as we saw some of the old houses inside the wall.

Bicycles could be hired but it is just a wall around a city and the downstairs street level appeared top be far more interesting

I guess I had in mind European walled cities and their size. This is on a different scale altogether. I didn't have much time to explore, it was hot and this was the tail end of my big day, but I would like to return and maybe hire a bike to do the whole wall. I love that the city... More

We hired a tandem and cycled the full perimeter of the city wall (13.5 kilometers). Why? Because it was there. The flagstones were very bumpy and the back seat of the tandem didn't have the suspension of the front seat or two singles, (which we could have hired for the same price but we wanted to try a tandem). We... More

This is for runners. Who already know the absolute best way to see any city is 5:30 in the morning with the GPS watch running and the Asics laced tight. Circumnavigation of the (outside) of the wall is 14km. There's a bit of to-ing and fro-ing at the 8 or so road crossings. But it's worth it. Get up early... More
