As with all tourist areas in China today, Shamian Island has been cleaned up, rebuilt and while it is a pleasant place to stroll around for a few hours it really lacks authenticity. Starbucks, tourist shops, very little atmosphere compared to 25 years ago. More

Lots of shops, restaurants and a unique atmosphere due to the historical buildings colonial architecture. Many explanatory signs in English ... and "english-speaking" shop owners. I was in Shenzhen for business... but followed a friend's advice and used the inexpensive high-speed train and metro to easily reach it. A well worth it daily excursion. More

Look for the history of Shamian island boards which detail the not-so-glorious history of Britain and other European countries, and Shamian and China in general. Expensive shops and hotels, but walking is free and it is a great place to visit. More

Enjoy strolling the streets and watching children playing, women practicing Tai Chi, and shopping. I highly recommend checking out Judy's gift shop, a small shop near the Victory Hotel with big price savings. Judy is an extremely nice owner that knows how to treat her costumers and make them come back for more. More

Fun little island. Great souvenier selection. You can find all kinds of things in the little shops there and it isn't such a scavenger hunt like Haizu Square is. It's a lovely little area, the shopkeepers were really nice and there are some fun cafes and restaurants. I'd go there for souveniers over anywhere else in GZ, and the ambience... More
