Originally a double tracked railway and part of the main line, it is now a single track and used only for tourist trains. This meant plenty of stops along the way to photograph the views and wander through disused tunnels. There is a long stop for lunch. Our tour had pre-booked a meal at a local Babushka's house but there... More

Easy hiking waits for you if you choose to travel this part of railway. On the one hand you'll have beautiful and clean Baikal lake, on the other hand you'll have some rocky walls to climb or just admire. Many places to install a camp and spend few days here. It's windy and sunny here at summer, usually. And in... More

Need to bring your own food and drink. There isn't any entertainment in the cars, as the goal is to enjoy the view. There are stops for history lessons and a chance to explore. Unfortunately it rained when I went, but the fall colors were still beautiful.

The road is beautiful, train trip along the shoreline is great. My advice- best time to go is end of summer or early fall, nature here is beautiful this time

We were not lucky with the weather, but we still liked it. The route was interesting with nice views, the guide was very good, there was enough stops... The guide was talking only in Russian and there was really a lot of information the gave and she did it in a very interesting way. I understand Russian and it was... More

Of particular interest to rail enthuisiasts, this line is now a branch and is only a tourist railway with one return journey daily leaving Irkutsk around 0800 and taking all day with various stops along the way, including a 2 hour one for lunch which can be prebooked (not sure where as this was part of a package booked in... We enjoyed aspects of the circumbaikal, the scenery was stunning and the line itself is a marvel of engineering, what we found EXTREMELY unpleasent however was that most of the local were so drunk that they couldn't even stand a few of them even had to be carried onto the train, there were a couple of violent altercations in the... We traveled on the Circumbaikal Railway, a twelve hour trip on the rails that took four years to build in 1900. I had read about the lake and the Circumbaikal Railway. I grew up at the tip of Lake Superior, a beautiful lake, and had always wanted to see Lake Baikal, the largest and deepest lake. That is one of... More

Each meter of Circumbaikal Railaway is a brathtaking view of Baikal impossible to forget. I travelled by the local train from Sludyanka in June 2009. One way trip takes about 4 hours 30 minutes so it makes sense to stay for at least 1 night in Port Baikal (final station) and to enjoy local nature and hospitality. Circumbaikal Railway was... More
