I made this journey in February 1973. Communism was the order of the day and `Intourist` handled all my travel arrangements. I traveled by myself and it was my first look over the `iron curtain`, I started my journey by train from London, then went across West and East Germany, (`through` the wall ) and Poland before arriving in Moscow.... Wonderful experience: a winter trip by train from Europe to Asia. We started in moscow and then stopped in Ekaterinburg, Lake Baikal ( Irkutsk ), Mongolia and arrived in Beijing. Temperature goes from -15 to -37 celsius but is very dry, so if you are dressed properly is not a problem - and the train is very warm ! The... More

As a couple of (almost) 60 year olds spending a month travelling across Russia (Siberia), Outer Mongolia and China in the middle of winter I can confirm that a sense of adventure and pre planning are essential. Using a British based company (The Russian Experience) we tailor made our trip to include the cultural sites of St Petersburg and Moscow... More

I have traveled the Australian trains (Ghan and Indian Pacific), but the Golden Eagle is several steps up again. Service is magnificent (carriages, staff and meals), but so is the range of scenery and people. Never a dull moment - don't think I sat in my own cabin for more than a couple of hours in the 12 days -... More

I had romanticized notions about this adventure. And it was quite an experience. There's definitely a route taken and you meet some interesting people from other countries. People for the most part were friendly - tourists most definitely, but the Chinese laborers on the first leg from Beijing to Ulaanbaatar weren't so keen on americans being there. They kind of... Trip was taken as part of a sundowners package from 01/11 for 21 days as independent travellers instead of group travel,  I can understand why this was a trip of a lifetime, we arrived in St Petersburg and really enjoyed the city, gives a good experience of Russia culture, you then have the overnight train to Moscow, if you planning... I did the Tran Mongolian trip in August over 3 weeks and enjoyed every minute. I did it as a middle aged manager who enjoys home comforts, masquerading as a solo independent intrepid traveler. The following are a few tips if you are planning to do it based on my experiences. Research research research, preparation prevents poor performance. I spent... More

We took the Private luxury rail tour from Moscow to Vladivostok, over 6k miles! We were taken care of from the airport to our 5 star hotel where we met our fellow travellers over a welcome dinner. After a comprehensive tour of Moscow, we had a champagne reception in the classic VIP waiting room before being led to our air... More

I took the train from Moscow into Ulan Bataar several years ago in 2005 and reading the reviews now bring back memories of an unforgettable trip. While a lot of things might have changed in the meantime I'm sure the over all feeling of the trip continues to be the same. I went to Moscow all the way from Zurich... More

In June of 2010 we took a 17 day trip on the trans-Siberian railway, Moscow to Vladivostok with stops in Yekaterinburg and Irkutsk/Lake Baikal. Everything was included in the price of the tour; we only had to pay for food. Breakfast was included at all the hotels. Of course we had to pay separately for the flights and visas, but... More
