After all the splender and gold it was nice to visit a palace that one could have called home.It was built by Nicholas the1st between 1826 and 1829 to ensure he could have private time with his family. It was in a superb location with lovely grounds including play and excersice equipment for the children and a farm to grow... More

Very nice, so different that all the gold. Shows how it was in the beginning, small, simple. The different areas of the cottage show the different periods of the history.

This was our second visit to St. Petersburg so we visited some slightly out of the ordinary destinations. We came out to Peterhof to see the Cascade Fountain launch at 11:00 AM, having missed that event on our last visit. Then we visited Cottage Palace, the casual retreat built by Nicholas I for his wife who hated the grandeur of... More

Few people bother with this palace. It is not like the grand palaces but more of palace that was lived in. It feels real and gives you the feeling that this is a place that you could aspire to and indeed take ideas from that you could use in your own home rather than gold ceilings! Well worth a visit... The Tzars were kings and lived like royalty. However, relative to the other palaces, The Nicholas I Cottage almost appeared like a place that some real people might live in. We saw this as an adjunct to a cruise excursion to The Peterhof (not where real people live!). While elegant it was understated and countrified in the tradition of some... More

If your going to spend the 2hr going and coming from the Peterhof you should include the tour of this small Palace. Very nice and not very big by St. Pete standards.

When the palace building was not suitable for living anymore, the family of Tsar moved to the smaller mansion near by. Interesting is it´s garden with facilities for kids and relax.

Going to Peterhof was a bit of work, such as traveling by boat all the way to the island. The stuff waited to fill the boat with passengers and did not live the dock in the time expected on both ways. There was no food or water being sold inside so we just sat there for hours while it rained,... More

It was a long walk to the cottage and the setting was peaceful, but after everything else, seemed out of place. It would have been better if people were alowed to go in, rather than peeking through the windows
