This is close to being the very heart and soul of the city, lacking only the presence of water that is such an indispensible feature of St. Petersburg. There is very little that is Russian about it, not surprising since it was designed by an Italian in the 3rd decade of the 19th Cent. It is immense in both its... More

Palace Square is the main square in St P and where the famous Hermitage / Winter Palace is based. It's incredible and if you've studied any Russian history, it's a must.

A balmy Saturday afternoon in the autumn provided us with a wonderful occasion to mingle with the crowds and see all shades of locals enjoying the weather, the space, the vendors, music, flash mobs [2 separate], the vistas and each other. It is probably also elegant -- if cold -- in winter, alone. But when it's hot, it's HOT!

This is a vast square, surrounded in part by the Hermitage Museum, the (Winter Palace - which is now part of the Hermitage Museum), General Staff Building and the Guards Corp Building. There is a huge column of red granite in the center of the square, designed for Alexander I for his victory in the Napoleonic war. The colors of... More

News - the Hermitage has just purchased the last yellow curved buildings facing the south side of the square, so hopefully they will fill them with currently-stored collections in the future. Driving on and around the square is allowed, and there is still a small, free parking lot on the east side of the side where taxis may be easily... More

It's just a MUST to see like almost everything in St.Petersburg. when you are right on the Palace square there is prospect wherever you look. and prospect view has been always impressive for me. also good to take photos. Mind the crown on the top of the Hermitage, which is almost burning under the sun.

Standing in the place where the October Revolution occurred in 1917 is incomparable. The view of the Winter Palace, the Central Staff Building, a park to the left and the sound of Nevsky Prospect traffic crossing over the Neva is unparalleled.

It is very big and surrounded by Hermitage and other beautiful buildings. if you visit it at sunset of a delicious sunny September day, like me, you will love it.
