Perhaps we went at the wrong time but most of the (relatively small) area available to see was cordoned off, it looked as though a Christening was being held. What you could see looked beautiful but for such a large Church I expected far more to be accessible to the visiting public.

Beautiful building, with a magic atmosphere....
Do not miss the religious services to enjoy the music and the ritual.
There is an area reserverd for tourist. My friend and I covered our heads with a foulard and went direct to the area for those of orthodox religion. We tried not to disturb anybody and we kept our mouths closed while...

This cathedral is only a couple of minutes’ walk from Theater Square with Mariinsky Opera House. I first visited the cathedral on the day of remembrance - for all the sailors missing at sea... The poignant moment didnot take away the splendour and the beauty of the plcae of worship. The Nikolski Sobor, at the sailors quarters, located close to Sennaya Ploschad/Sadovaya metros and a short walk from St Isaacs/ Marinski Theatre, is a large church...
