Piskaryovskoye Memorial Cemetery is a somber, powerful place, which stuns you with the contrast of neatly landscaped mounds and mostly open space, and the the reality that around you are about buried about a half-million people. I visited this cemetery with my Leningrad hosts during my trip to the Soviet Union in 1991. I was deeply moved being there and I cried a lot. The Cemetery for the Siege of Leningrad - This is the most moving place I have ever visited - my spine crawls just to think back to it! It is almost 20 years since I was there but I can still "see" it in my mind's eye. I am about to re-visit St Petersburg, as it now is, after all... more
