Not far from Palace Square (and surrounded by decent restaurants), is the most excellent Mikhaelovski Palace more commonly known as the Russian Museum. This was my second favorite museum in Russia - behind only the Hermitage. First of all, it's in a palace beautiful in its own right. Second, you're not as likely to be subject to the mass crowds... more
