Try to get your guide to show you typical houses and impress on them that Russian things should get more attention. Old Russian buildings are hard to come by except in arch park halfway between Moscow and ST PETE More

The palace is a real gem; the Peterhof and Pushkin Parks are better. More

This was a smaller palace but nonetheless quite lovely in its own right. If you are going to St. Catherine's, then you should include this palace on your trip. More

I never feel it like St-Petersburg, it has much more Moskow spirit. Quite wild park, not durty, but very haotic. It seems more like a big village house than a palace More

I love the Palace Museum in Pavlovsk because it's more "a home" than ceremonial palace, shows the royal family as usual people. In a beautiful park you can relax and dream on a hot afternoon in the shadow of old trees More

You can also take the metro (line 2, blue) from central St. Petersburg to Moskovskaya, and from there catch a minibus to Catherine's Palace or Pavlovsk. The palace and its vast park were a... More

If Rococo isn't your thing, the Great Palace in Pavlovsk offers something a little different. The style is much more sedate and "homey" than most of the other big tourist draws. You will also not be tripping over hoards of other tourists. There is a lovely library which I had to myself to explore. I also really enjoyed the park... More
